Mitchell Advocate Changes
Hands
After' being in the .hands of the
Davis family for nearly three quar-
ters of a century, the Mitchell Advo-
cate,, one of the brightest of the On-
tario, weekly papers, has passed tato
new hands. The new editor is Mr.
Gordon V. Mounteer, a former pub-
lisher of the Trenton Courier-Advo-
'aite. The Advance was founded in
Mitchell on April 7th, 1860, by the
late W. R. Davis and his brother, the
late J. E. Davis, and since 1893 has
been owned and edited by W. R.
Davis, and his son, Mr. II. D. Davis,
who has ably edited the paper alone
for the past eleven years.
Painful Accident
Terribly burned about the body
when she stepped into a vat of scald-
ing apple butter at the home of her
aunt, Mrs. L. Rats, of Mitchell, Betty
Carse, aged 7, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Ed. Carse, Kitchener died in
the General Hospital. The little girl
was visiting with her parents at the
home of her aunt and uncle in Kit-
chen and the apple butter was left
standing on the back ,porch of the
house until .her, parents were ready
to take it home in their car. Betty
stepped out of the, back • door of the
house and put her foot in the centre
of the vat. She jumped but Waller

WINNERS OF CONTEST
The sixth annual Championship
Public Speaking Contest and third
annual Spelling Match were conduct-
ed in the auditorium of the Clinton
Collegiate Institute, on Saturday af-
ternoon, Oct. 28t1a. A new contest
was introduced for the first year, a
Story Telling Contest for noys and
girls, eight years of afe and under,
the subject to be "My Pet". The
three competitions were under the
direction of the Huron County Bra-
nch of the. Ontario Department of
Agriculture and the contestants we-
re the winners of the public Speaking
story telling and spelling contests
conducted at each School Fairs in the
County.. Cash prizes of $5, $3, $2,
and $1 were awarded to the winners
in the Spelling Match, and the win-
ners in the Story Telling contest re-
ceived $4.00, $3, and $2. Following
are the prize winners:—Public Speak

Religious Conference Is Held
At Crediton
Delegates tou the 'Religious Ed -
aation Conference gathered at Cred-
iton on Friday from- Exeter, Elim-
ville, Centralia, Thames Road and a
number of other churches in Usborne
and Stephen Tp.s. In the forenoon
session in Crediton United the Rev.
J. Johnston, pastor, opened proceed-
ings and was followed by the presi-
dent, Arthur Amy of Crediton Evan-
gelical The secretary, Miss Ruby
Finkbeiner of Crediton, gave her re
port. "The Task As I See It." was
the topic of Rev. J. E. Peters of Elim
ville and discussions followed. Mr.
Clayton Sims gave a vocal solo. A
supper was served and the after din-
ner speaker was Rev. Johnston, of
Lucan. Evening proceedings were
opened with a song service I:ed by
the choir of Main St.,. Exeter. Wor-
ship was conducted by the ,Rev. M.A.
Hunt, of Exeter and after the receipt
of some reports, Hubert Janes, joint
superintendent of James St., Exeter
installed the officers as follows: --
