Recent showery wea- ther has greatly improved the condi- tion of the land for fall wheat ger- mination. Apple picking is in full swing in all the orchards districts and _a fine crop ' of clean, healthy fruit, is being harvested. Pastures lave held up fairly well in Eastern Ont., and live stock should go into stables : in good condition. From Leeds County comes the :report that more clover and alfalfa are being left for seed than usual, the second cut alfalfa having an excellent seed set. T' Hullers Oats. As a cheap source of high quality feed of particular value' for poultry and young stock and one which .can be used at once without processing, except perhaps grinding hulless oats has no equal writes A. There are men who claim that there is no benefit in the way, of kil- ling rootstocks of sow thistle and couch grass remaining in the soil af- ter summer cultivation. Others re- gard ridging as supplementary to early after -harvesting cultivation in the eradiction of weeds. At the Kempville Agricultural school in On- tario ridging is considered an imp- ortant tillage practice, all land plow- ed early and subsequently„ top work- ed being drilled up in early fall. An- other advantage of ridging is that it aids in getting on the land a few days earlier in the spring which is a decided gain on low or heavy land. Some clays tend to run together if left in a highly cultivated stare all winter; but ridging up corrects this. bushel crop of hulIess oats weighing Killing The Flies r0. pounds per measured liusliei . is equal, to a. yield .of 42 bushels when figured on the basisiof 30 per ;cent hull;' Hulless' oats are very suscept- ible to smut and unless measures are taken to prevent this disease, the los- will be heavy.
