BUSY FARMER NEWS
320 Fairs To Be HeidOf the Agricultural Societies in
Ontario, some 320 plan to hold fairs
this year,• according to J. A. Carroll,
superintendent, Agricultural Societ-
ies Branch. "In certain quarters"
said Mr..Carroll, "there was feeling
that government and municipal cuts
in grants would tend to disrupt the
plans of many of these organizations
However, from the impression gained.it the District Fair Association me-
etings I have attended throughout the
province, I feel that the directors are
determined by increased energy andenterprise to maintain the standardsof the organizations, many of whichhave been in existence for almost a
century."
Value of Orchards
That • good fruit farms are worth
owning, is the advice of a well-known
agricultural authority, Owners sho-
uld make' every effort to keep them
in the future as in the past. Fur-

Engagement—Dr. and Mrs. Jos-
eph P,outledge, Zurich, announce the
, engagement of their daughter, Ida
Josephine to Leonard Arthur Birk,
B. S. A,, of Guelph, • son of Mr.
Adam Birk and the late Mrs. Birk
of Dashwood, Ontario, the marriage
to take place early in August.
Mr. Milton Oesch on Monday Mov-
ed his barber shop equipment from
the Deitz Block to the place of bus-
iness formerly known as Oescii's bar-
ber shop, the building just South of
the Dc•itz block, where hnuroversents
have been made, and the interrior ie -
novated, and Mr. Oesch now has a
fine placer of business.
The extreme hot weather was bro-
ught to a close on Tuesday evening,
when a very light shower of rain
visited us and it turned much more
moderate and cooler. Ther trerrr
dry spell is rushing along the harvest
• crops very rapidly and the farmers
• are busily engaged cutting their oats
having the wheat and barley crops
hauled in. The oat crop is not near
as heavy as last year.
• It apparently is more than farmers
who are experiencing a dry season,
as a number of villagers who are
depeinhmt on the loc al :supply of
water for house use, as the pump in
the deep water well has not been
working for several weeks; and some
f the other local wells are being
overtaxed as a result, and giving out.
Fut promises have been made that
the new pumping equipment will ar-
ri e on Thursday of this week, and
will likely be installed the latter days
of the week. Here's hoping,
