Phone 140 n BUSY FARMER NEWS Ample Supply of Red Clover With Prices on 1932 Level As a result of favorable weather conditions, in the Fall of 1932, hun- dreds of farmers were able to aug- ment their incomes through the sale of red clover seed. Present supplies of hardy home-grown seed are ample to take care of ordinary demand. Prices are likely to be on• the same low level as those of last year. It should be unnecessary therefore, to. stint the amount of seed. used, or limit the acreage sown to red clover, this year. • Sweet Potatoes in Kent J. C. 'Smith, a fruit and vegetable farmer near Ridgetown in Kent Co. Ontario, is an enthusiastic grower of sweet potatoes -and claims that all Canada's needs can be produced in the Counties of Essex, Kent and Lanibton and in the Niagara District. In April of 1932, Mr. Smith ordered five hampers of sweet potatoes and secured the directions from a large producer in Southern Kentucky. The yams were planted in April in a hot- bed and in 18 days the young spro- uts began to rise above the ground. When about. ••three inches hi height, they' were ' transplanted in rows 28 in-ches in the row. By the 10th of October the harvesting . began. The potatoes were dug with a digger or plowed out of the ground. There may be as many as 8 to 10 tubers in a hill. The yield per acre was approxi- mately 175 bushels. The price per bushel was from $1.25 to $1.50. Mr. Smith is importing a large shipment from Kentucky within a short time .for his own planting. Approximately 400 cars are imported annually, Dir. Smith says, and they represent an income of $250,000 to American pro- ducers. Hardwood Versus Coal Reports ;to the Department state `that many people, influenced by the 'wide difference in price, are Hing their fuel requirernents with hard- wood, in place of coal. Fanners, to whom this source of revenue has be- en opened, are now getting returns on their foresight in giving attention to woodlots. Swine Cars Valuable A total of 45 stops were made by the Ontario Swine' Demonstration cars which completed their itinerary on March 4th. Animal husbandry experts from the Departments at ,Toronto and Ottawa gave an inter-; `esting series of lectures, and paras- ites were discussed by authorities from authorities from the Ontario Veterinary College. The lecture cars carried an interesting collection of charts and exhibits and a full coach was devoted to breeding s-: an which were sold to the farmers. During the first two weeks in Eastern Ontario the sales at each stop averaged five. At the first 80 stops, a total of 180 sows and 18 boars were distributed. The average attendance was 85 per ;top. A 'keen interest in swine rais- ing was evidenced and enquiries were made regarding feeding methods, colony houses and parasite control. The officials made it plain that Can- ada has a surplus of hogs and the silly market for the surplus is in Great Britain where quality prod- uct is wanted. The Ontario farmer's hopectliena is in quality hogs, and through'better breeding stock, cor- rect rations, parasite control and goad' swine • husbandry the Ontario growers may improve his position. ,Avoid Inferior Seed No one. . can afford to risk buying inferior - Seed -with the margin of profit hi farming as small as it is to -day,` states M. T. Munn, State Seed Analyst, in, New ,York and well knowir in Canada. "Already this season certain, 'papers are carrying allueing advertisements of 'bargains seedsthat is seeds that are quoted at ridiculously' low prices," says Mr. Munn. "Some farmers, in order to economise have sent away for some of these sa-called bargains but when tests were made in the seed IabatorY these in nearly every case have been found unfit•or. even dangerous for planting because Rof low or weak ger- mination, or on account of the large variety of weed" seed they contain". "Bargain seeds, are never worth buying and farmers should pay no at- tention ttention to advertisements where price alone is the only'' description given Reliable seedsmen do• not approve of advertisements where seeds are off- ered at stipulated prices without any indidation of their quality or origin. Current Crop Reports A number of farmers in . Bruce Coniity have been enquiring for good seed oats. -Sales have been made at adout 45e a bushel. A good demand for horses is noted in Perth County, with 33 head being sold at an auction sale in Stratford. One team aold at $350 and other horses as high as $150 each. Some scarcity of good quality seed oats and barley is ob- served in Wellington County, due to the excessive moisture of 1932. Tur- nips are moving to market there at 15e to 18e. Approximately fifty car loads of: potatoes have been shipped from the Caradoe section in 1Vliddre- sex to :Windsor, .prices being about 63c a bag recently. Livestock arein good condition hi most counties. Pot- atoes are beingtrucked into Musk- oka and Parry Sound Districts from Sinxcoe County at 85c per bag. Hay is being trucked in at 161.33.00 per ton. delivered. Enquiries for farm help. have been: received in numerous dis- tricts, with the offered salaries rang- ing from $175 to $300 per year. Ali the seed cleaning plants in Renfrew County are operating. Two cars of. beef Battle were shipped to the Wni- pipet market •from Rainy 'driver and fair prices received. A car of fine. registered cattle were brought into, this district AVM old Ontario. .Thursday, JYl;gich ttatz, 'ti; 33 YOUR Hardware and Fu I STORE WE ARE NOW FINISHED, TAKING • STOCK,Y.
