learn that less freight Passed through
the Sault canal this year than in any

Two Pay Fines After
Argument
In Godeiich ,Police Court last Wed-
nesday, after paying a fine of $15.25
in traffic court there was not much
profit in the load of Christmas trees
which Charles McCormich, of London
transported from near Wiarton to
the Forest City. He was found guilty
at Exeter of having a load on the
highway wider than 06 inches. How-
ever he might never have ;seen in
court had he not got into an argu-
mat with Donald McKinnon, of Hen-
,(sali, w'ho took objection to McCorm-
ick's load, McKinnon's objection had
merit, but his language was terrible.
He paad: 3,25 for. ,usiu" b?a nl ess-:
"aua =` 40M1 V90 elle.. In
all the court was richer by $28.50,
which is a lot of money the day after
Christmas.

ARREARS
In going over ouy records at the
end of the past year we find that
a small number of subscribers
have not paid • their subscription
for some time and before having
the account grow larger we will
discontinue until the .arrears a.r0
paid up. Much as we would like to
continue on and give credit, but
our financial obligations have to
be met at the end of each month,
and with everything we buy up
to the highest limit, we 'must try
and make ends meet somehow. A.
number of things we regnire'eaeh

and we cannot meet these pay-

our product. Those in arrears be
good enough and let us have the
amount due and we can go on for
another year.

Keith's Bakers is this week adver-
tising bread over the counter in the
rstere at 5c a loaf, this surely is get-
ting back to the pre-war days when
t'ii1ss daily article that we must have,
4as selling at the 5c rate. How-
cver, we cannot understand how it
would be possible that bread could be
delivered in the country at this re-
s ierkable low, and while this is a low
ice for bread yet it is only too bad
hen a person cannot even raise the
Ir ice of 5c to buy a loaf.
OBITUARY
•''New Year's Day ushered in sad-
ness and mourning • into the home of
Mr, and Mrs. John Foster, of the
D'!bylon Line, when on that day Mrs.
Foster was called into another world.
Her maiden name was Margaret Mit-
tleholtz, and was a daughter of the
late Sinton Mittleholtz born, at St.
Clemens, and was for some fifty ye-
ars a resident of Hay Township, and
knew all about the pioneer life of
this `Comnmunity at that time. About
55 years ago she was united with her.
surviving husband, and together they.
shared the joys and sorrows of life,
and her age at passing was 76 years
5 months and 18 days. Mrs. Foster
had been ill for the last while, and
she grew gradually weaker till New
"Year's Day she passed on. Surviv-
ing are five sons,. Louis Foster of
Kitchener, Alphonse of Newell, Al-
bert and Fred of the West; Alex Fos-
ter of Zurich; two daughter, Mrs. S.
Dieterich and Mrs, J. Battler of the
Babylon Line, Hay, and her sorrow-
ing husband, Mr. John Foster, who
will: greatly miss his companion all
these years. Two brothers, Andrew
and John Mittleholtz of Kitchener,
is intended to later build a branch and also thre sisters also survive. The
