THE BY-ELECTIONS e
Monday was by-election day in
the Dominion, and three elections we-
re fought to a finish. The two most
interesting events in this district we-
re the ones of London and S, Water-
loo. In the former, Ho n. Dr. Man-
ion the new Conservative leader was
opposed by E. O. Hall, C.C.F., the
former winning with over §,000 maj-
ority, while in the S. Waterloo cam-
paign Karl Homuth the Conservative
won over two opponents a Liberal
and C. C. F., ,Homuth getting more
votes than the other • two together.
The other contest was in Brandon,
where Matthews Liberal won over
the Conservative condidate by about
900 majority, and 3,00 over the .C.0
F. In Montreal a Liberal wee given
an acclamation. .
IS ACQUITTED
Mrs. Wm. Magee, 37 yr. old Morris
Twp. farmer's wife, on Wednesday of
last week was »acquitted on a charge
of mnrdereeg, her ten • months old da-
ughter, Mild ed ' Ruth . The oecrsion
was rendered by the jury at Goder-
ich without leaving the courtroom;
and on instruction of the trial judge
Mr. Justice C. P. McPague. Mrs. Ma-
gee took the verdict quietly as did
the spectators, for it was evident to
all that the Court and the Crown
were in »accord with the trend of the
defence, that the accused was not re-
sponsible mentally for her action in
drowning the child. Eight neighbors
and :Friends Of the accused added
their testimony to the expert evid-
ence of two psychiatrists, who testi-
fied. Mrs. Magee was insane when she
drowned her only child. She was
taken to a mental Hosnital until' such.
time'that she is well again.
