Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Smith and. Mae made a business trip to Londbm an Monday. Real nice and warm weather ]aas visited. us this week after the cool spell, and it is needed by many, of ;he farmers to get in their bean: ¢top and sow the fall wheat. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Taylor .Sr., and son Melvin and daugs•.en roan of Ghiselhurst were recent visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs.. Say Mer- ner, 14th eon. London Western Fair is being held this week, and the first two nays there has been a vast biieatease in at- tendance from last year, and as the foronto Ex. also had an increase,We trust this will be passer on down to the local smaller fairs Dr. W. B. Coxon is having work- men engaged in his, residential home just south of Eckert Bakery, in.mak- ing some changes and renovating the interior of the house, provision will be made •for the Doctor to have his office in this residence when .complet- ed. At a recent congregational meeting of the St. Peter's Lutheran congre- gation, Zurich, it was decided not to :told a fowl supper this fall, and ;as a consequence, . we see no. sins of the usual "big feed" this fall unless some other church organization will hold one. Good Tax Payers As we observed in the County Town weekly, the •Goderich SignaI- Star that Huron County .is soon to hold its annual sale of lands for tax- es, and there are some ninety listed. But fortunately we notice there is not one parcel in either Zurich or Hay Township which bespeaks well for the citizens as good tax payers, and meeting the obligations. Lower Hydro Rates The local Hydro Commission have received the good news .that the rates have taken about a ten per cent re- duction on the k.w. changes, while the service charges and installed capac- ity and the h, p. gate to the Commis- sion remain the same. While the re- duction is only small., still it shows that the local system is on a good pay ing basis of which we can be proud off. NEW SCHOOL. INSPECTOR There has been a change in .the division of Huron County for the purpose of public school inspection, the territory now being arranbed as North and South •Huron instead of East and West Huron, as in previous years. Mr. J. H. Kincaid, former York County school teacher, has be- en named successor to Mr. ,rortn Har- tley, whose retirement last year frons the East Huron Inspectorate was for- ced by ill health, and Mr. Kincaid has come to Goderinh ti li>e. Mr E. C. Beacom, formerly inspector for West Huron, now will have South Huron under his jurasdiction, and Mr. Kincaid will preside over the schoole in North Huron. HOPES FOR PLANE TRIP. Bright and cheery on her 98th bir- thday, Mrs. Jane Lynn Goderren's old- est citizen, personally received scores of visitors at her home Sunday. Many messages of congratulations came ton one from Prime Minister King, which she prizes very much. "Yes, I'd go up in an airplane if they brought one to my door," she said, adding she had exprcesed a desire to go up while vis- iting in Detroit, "but my chiildfen talked me out of it" Mother of -1:' children herself, and also reared grandchildren. Mrs. Lynn is not Is- ish born, as =one would imagine, she was born at Caledonia, and says she's: proud to call herself a Canadian, 4. Virg.. in on auto accident at Kippen on August 9th, was held' in the town hall, SEcaforth, last Tuesday after- noon. "We unanimously agree that Mabel Ritter came to her death in a car driven by Mr. Stillwell on Aug- ust ath on Highway No. 4, at Kip - pen, Ont. and we ttaaeh no blame to 1 anyone." Dr. F. J. Burrows, coroner presided over the inquest and Crown Attorney D. E. Il&lanes, of Goderich examined the witnesses. A PIONEER TEACHER In the sketch •of the life of the late George Baird, the dominie of S. NTe 1. ,Stanley, published in The Seaforth Expositor, the writer rec- ords that George Baird was the eld- 1 est of his parents' family and had Ito work on the farm, so his schooling was confined to a few months in the winter. "To obtain his first-class certificate he walked from Stanley to Goderich, a distance of 18 milee, and was there ready for his examination at 9 o'clock in the morning. The ex- amination lasted from 9 to 4 and was taken orally in arithmetic, gram- mar, six books of Euclid, geography 1 eh ebra, history, chemistry. bookke- eping, philosophy, etc. At 6 o'clock Ion the same day he received his cer- tificate and walked the eighteen miles home." The reader may reflect that if in these days education had to be as hardly won as it was by George Baird it might be more hiehly prized than it is by many of the present generation.-Goderich Signal -Star, Hensall Council Minutes The regular meeting of the ViIl- age Council was held in the Council Chamber on eve. of Sept. 6 aat 8 pen. wit all members present.
