ON CAR THEFT CHARGE '
Goderich—A few hours .after he
had allegedly stolen the automobile
of Herman Resnick, Exeter, Dan
Signock, a youthful Indian, was lod-
ged in Huron Cdunty jail.He appear-
ed on Friday, charged with the off-
ence, and was remanded until next;
Thursday for trial. Signock's capture'
by County Constable V. Jeffrey was
affected after he had ditched the
machine and wrecked it a short dis-
tance from Exeter.
HOPPERS ARE BAD
Regina—Grasshoppers clung to Re
ginians. The pests took over the cit;
and made themselves at home. The
"visitation" was probably the wo_;t-
Reginians have experienced. 3.11-i ash
ed, the hoppers invaded the storeke'I
eper's counters and cafe's trei1: s I
Science was called for defence. Many-
a storekeeper used various kinds o'
hadsmeiling stuff to keep the insect''
out. The chemicals, sometimes kero-
sene, were sprayed on store entrances
with the warning, "Hopper stay a-
wa' from my door."

a ]heavily built apparatus which life
the autos and trucks up off tile floor

FIRES AT VARNA
Last week we made mention of the
c of Mr. Clark's barn, but a corr-
spondent writes: Fire again visited
Varna over the week -end, two barns
in less than a mile being totally de -
•:troy ed with the season's crop. Both
"rcs occurred at practically the same
time of day and only n day apart,
The first was at the farm of Mr.
I-ield:nen where one of the finest
'tarns in the district went -up itt Pam -
es on Sunday about 6 o'clock. the
cat -se of the fire has not been deter-
mined. Threshing, was in progrars on
the farm of Wm. Clark, Babylon
lino, on Monday when the second
fire o"cursed. The hare and season's
crop were destroyed, but \?'itll the as-
sistance of the I'rueafi,.ld Fire Brig-
ade, the remainder of the farm build-
ings and the house were saved. This
stakes four fires in less than two
weeks in the district and the Varna
residents are seriously considering of
getting some kind of fire fighting
equipment.'

SHOULD REPLANT ORCHARDS
(St. Marl's Journal -Argus)
The rats with which apple and fruit
orchards have disappeared from th
farms in this part of Ontario is alar-
ming. And the worst of it is. that v -e- -
few farmers are doing a•nythin.g tc
replace the trees which their grand
parents planted. If some concerto.'
effort is not made very soon, houso-
wives will find that apples will ap
proximate the price of oranges it
this land which produces the fines'
flavored apples on the continent
There seems to be a ,job for the P .
partment of Agriculture to
campaign for the replanting of th
fine orchards which were part of ev-
ery farm a quarter-century ago.
