A meeting of the directors of the
Zurich Agricultural Society was held
recently when the prize list was gone
over and other plans and arrangem-
ents made. The annual fair will be
geld this year on .Monday and Tues-
day, September 26th and 27th.

Stade enjoyed a motor trip to Sar-
nia last Wednesday afternoon and
while there, were of course rrnpress-
ed with the /fine new Blue Water
bridge, and speak highly of the won-
derful structure.
Mrs. Carrie Stoddard left on Sat-
urday far her home in. Rochester, N.
Y., after visiting with her sister Mrs
Elizabeth Webber, at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Herb. Mousseau, of
Zurich. Mrs. !Stoddard, Mrs. Webber
Joyce and Betty .Mousseau were camp
ing at Grand Bend for a week.
Thanksgiving Day
A proclamation fixing Thanksgiv-
ing Day for October 10th, the second
Monday in October, has been pub-
lished in the Canada Gazette.
Many Attend Picnic
A goodly number attended the pic-
nic at Grand Bend last Wednesday
afternoon held under the auspices of
the Hay Township Farmers' Mutual
Fire Insurance Co. There was a fine
programme of sports run off and
some interesting addresses and de-
monstrations given.
Cars on Mixup
Last Thursday evening about elev-
en o'clock there was a real shakeup
of autos at the first narrow bridge in
the big swamp, A small tudor in
charge of Mr. Corriveau puree up
near the [bridge and turned out and
waited, along came a large sedan
from Clinton who crossed the bridge
and hooked into the Corriveau ear,
with the result that it was damaged,
and had a wheel tore off, while the
Clinton car rolled over several times
before it finally stoppe;l. A new
light delivery Dodge happened along
and got busy transpori,ing the injur-
ed passengers to Zurich, and was re-
turning for another load and while in
the act of getting reach to load up,
along come a large sedan from Ex-
eter, and seemed to plow right thro-
ugh the large gathering by this time,
and )hissed everything but the new
Dodge delivery which got a bad shak
;ng up but was able to steam off on
its own power. The large Exeter se-
dan took to the ditch and after sev-
eral turns and smashes finally came
to a stop. It is a narrw bridge at
a bad place, but these autos looked
as though they had been treated to
some of the badness also. Then the

fol] owing day, Friday, a Seaforth
man was driving a mile west of town
on the same road, when he encounter-
ed some loose gravel that the grader
was working with, and this car took
to the "tumbles" and finally found
itself resting on the top • and the
• wheels ail four up in the air in Mr.
Delbert Geiger's oat field near by.

Mrs. Andrew Price of Stanley an-
nounces the engagement of her dau-
ghter Viola Mary •Stelck to William
Arthur Golding, son of Mr. and Mrs.
W. H. Golding of Seaforth, the mar-
riage to take place early in August.
NEW ROAD SUPERVISOR
PPi c'v Hewitt of Exeter, .has been
appoinited road supervisor to Iook af-
ter the new. 'r'ovincial Highway from

way. Mr. Hewitt has been employed
with the 'Excites;, Rural Hydro Com-

TOO,GAY-PAYS FINE
Over -exuberance at a dance at
Grand' Bend last Saturday night ,re-
sulted in trouble for 'Russell Shall -
horn, of Toronto. The man's enthus-
iasm was .objectionrable to the manage
ment ad the dance hall and the pat-,
rons, and when passive objections
were not effective the law was called
in. Shallhorn was taken to Goderich
and taken before F. G. Weir, J.P.,
where he paid a $5 fine for disorderly
conduct..
GORDON BISSET IN HOSPITAL
Mr. Gordon Bisset, of Saltford
Heights, was taken to Alexandra Hos-
pital .on Saturday when it was dis-
covered that a ;broken rib had punc-
tured his lung. Two days before he
had slipped on wet cement outside
his barn and had fallen heavily on the
milk pails he was carrying. He was
treated at his home for broken ribs,
but his condition became worse it
was discovered that one of the ribs
had punctured his lung. He is re-
ported to be doing well at the hospital
but will be there for some time
yet.--Goderich Signal. -Star.
QUITS AS LEADER
Ontario Conservatives last week
were scheduled to hold a convention
to name a successor to Provincial
Leader Earl Rowe before October 15
Mr. Rowe, elected slightly more than
two years ago to head the Conservat-
ive party in Ontario, announced his
intention to retire from the post
shortly after the 15th annual meet-
ing of the Ont. Conservative Assooa-
tion got under way. Cecil G. Frost
newly -elected president, said that
within two weeks the new executive
of the association will meet to set a
date for a'oQnventton Ito elect a nepi+
