Probably the New Leader
It is said that Hon. R. J. Manion,
M.C., has a fine chance of securing
the leadership of the Conservative

Addressing the Huron County Co-
uncil at the opening of the June ses-
sion last Tuesday afternoon, Warden
W. Haacke, referring to therumored
proposal of the abolition of county
councils remarked: As far as the ab-
olition of county councils is concern-
ed, I have .no doubt we are overgov-
erned in Canada in proportion to the
population, ,but I do net think that
the abolition of county councils is the
proper step. I would favor the aboli-
tion of the Provincial Government,
and I have no doubt if a plebscite we-
re taken on the question the Provinc-
ial. Government would be the one to
go. Cries of Hear, hear! greeted the
statement. Reeve; Geo. •MeNall, Blyth
observed that the Council had been
severely critized for spending $7,000
for an assessment, 'which cost $1,600
in 1929, produced records to show.
that the 1929 assessment cost over
$4,000 without the cost of appeals,
The Connell was startled to hear
from a, G. Taylor, reeve or S. Dor-
chester, Elgin Co,, that an equaliz-
ation assessment had been made of
Elgin for $1,400, which is less than
quarter of that which Huron has sign
ed an agreement.
A ,reforestation plot for every sch-
ool section in Huron County, was the
plan outlined by E C. Beacom, insp-
ector for W. Huron, and it was giv-
en a most favorable roception. In
malting his report to council Ro:
Johnston corn ,borer inspector, said
that the past was not as prave;agt in
Huron as a year ago; the odd farm-
