FIRE AT MITCHELL Damage that will run into thous- ands of dollars was done on Monday night by fire, water and smoke in a blaze in George Edighoffer .& Son departmental store at Mitchell. The 'fire broke out about 8 p.m. in the storage section, George Edighoffer was work ing in the office and was unaware of the outbreak. HIGHER GRANTS Toronto—Chief aim of a promised increase in school grants is the redu- ction of the school mill rate ,Dr. Mc- Arthur, Ont., deputy minister of ed- ucation.said, he could give reasonable assurance that grants to school boards and boards of education would be $1,200,000 higher this year than in 193'7 LITTLE HIGHWAY JOBS Goderich—Farmers who during the last few years have been snaking extra maney working on provincial highways are being advised this year to .stay on the land and stick to the business of farming, for there is go- ing to be very little work done on provincial highways in Huron or any other county. "That's just what I'm telling the job seekers," said Jmnes Ballantyne, M.L.A., Huron., "I don't know yet what appropriation we are going to get, if any. I am trying to land .Iver or six miles of per- rnanent highway construction on No. 21 between Goderich and Hayfield, but I don't feel any too sure about it." District engineers say their ap- propriation for maintenance is so small this year that they will have to put patrolmen on three-day week. "Many men will not get on ,the roads until thistle. time," Mr. Ballantyne said. "Of"Course thereeis nine or 10 million dollars of cid contracts to be finished up, but over that it is hard to say what will happen. I'm hoping for the best." The W. M. S. of St. Peter's Luth- eran Church .held their monthly meet- ing on Thursday evening, April 21st, Mrs. J. Haberer conducted the open- ing devotions and also ,presented the topic. "The Power of Islami" She was assisted by Miss G. Weber and Rev. E. Turkheim. Mrs. L. Prang read the Thank -offering Thought and also offered a special prayer for Chr- istian :Higher Education.
