May Visit Canada
Rumors are circulated in London.
Eng., that the Ring and Queen ma: -
visit Canada prior to going to .,India
for the duii:lar but no com6rmation
is availahle . The gossip column of
The Evening Star, said in was gener-
ally expected at court that the visit
to India might be deferred for at
least 12 months. It added that if so,
the Ring and Queen might visit an-
other part of the empire; Canada is
suggested.
A Life Sentence
Facing the gray walls of a penit-
entiary for the declining years of his
71 -year-old Dr. Charles A. Cline of
London was last week sentenced to a
life imprisonment by Justice Jeffrey
in that city. Dr. Cline's trial on a
charge of murdering Miss. Mary Wil-
]cinson, London schoolteacher termin-
ated suddenly before the defence ev-
idence was called, when crown auth-
orities agreed to accept a proffered
plea of guilty tto manslaughter. Two
other other parties a Mr. and .Mas.
Robinson who also implicated in the
case were a few days previously sen•
tenced to seven and five years resp-
ectively.
Mrs. Weston Dies
Funeral services were held on Fri-
day at Bayfield for Mrs. John West
on 6th concession, Goderich Twp.,
died last Tuesday at the home of her
son Alexander, in her 76th year. Be-
fore her marriage she was Miss Mara'
Nicholson, and was born in Pt, Hur•
on, but lived do Goderich Twp. for
25 years. 20 years ago she and her
husband retired to Godericn, but
after Mr. Weston's death five years
ago, she returned to the homestead
to live with her son. Surviving are
four sons: Alex at horse; iCiiirord,
Ben and Fred in Detroit; also four
daughters, Mrs. Janes Denomme of
_ray Township; Mrs. Hervey of De-
troit; Mrs. Cruttenden of Buffalo;
and Mrs. Johnston of Toronto.
A NEW MACHINE
Hay Council met on Monday
and as usual at this time of year, a
great deal of !business was up for
discussion. In the minutes we notice
that the council is calling for tenders
purchase a large power grader for
Circ Township roads. This, we think
a step in the right direction, a:
our township roads need just some.
thing like this to keep the roads iii
better condition during the summer
months when traffic is heaviest. Rai
we hope the council will not overlook
the matter in purchasing a machine
that can Ca E,3 be used in the winter'
months to combat against the snow;
as the time is here when people or
the concessions demand the road,
opened up in winter 'when there dc•
only a reasonable . amount of snow
thereon, and they have a right tc
..-;:'''re this demand, With the Pro....
tal-ing over the two main road `
through Zurich and Dashwood tlri:
spring, it seems -only reasonable that
the concessions should be kept open
as feeders to these roads which when
taken over will receive the best o'
attention in the winter as well as in
the summor. Little should be the
a'atepayers afraid of this extra exp
ense, as the Province pays half. of
this ,money expended, and with the
roads in the bad condition they were
this winter, many an auto has suff-
ered a breakage account that would
easily pay for the opending of many
miles of ordinarily snow driftec
roads which could be opened in a
very short time with the proper
equipment.
