New Sound System
The committee of management of
the Exeter Arena have purchased a
new sound equipment which is being
installed in the building by W. J.
Beer. Members of the committee vis-
ited Godexich recently and were .giv-
en a demonstration of the equipment
After investigating the system in oth-
er rinks the committee have purch-
ased an up-to-date equipment. The
new system will provide music each
evening for skating and amplifiers
are being installed in the gym for
music together with a microphone
that may be used in 'different parts of
the building for special occasions.

STEPHEN COUNCIL
The newly elected Council of the
Township of Stephen met in the;
Town Hall, Crediton, on Monday,the
10th of January at 11 a.m. Present:
Reeve, Chester Mawhinney; Deputy
Reeve, Edward Lamport and Council-
lors, Edmund Shapton, Roy Ratz and
Thomas Love. After each melnlber of
the Council had subscribed to his De-
claration of office, Rev. A. E. Pletch
offered prayer asking that Divine
Guidance be given the new Council
in the transaction of this year's bus-
iness. The reeve in his inaugural
address expressed his appreciation of
the hearty co-operation of each me-
rnber of the Council and the officials
throughout the past year and asked
fox the same consideration this year.
He also thought every,.efort should
be made to economize as much as
possiible in the expenditure of the
Municipality in order to keep down
the tax rate.
The minutes of the previous meet-
ing were then read and adopted.
Motion, that .the Reeve and Clerk
Ise authorized to sign the ,application
to the' Department • of Public 'High "
ways of the Province of Ontario for
the statutory subsidy to be allowed
on the expenditure incurred during
the year 1937 by the Township on its
roads :according to statements apd•
schedules prepared. .
Motion, that ' by -gamy •51.8 to pro-
vide for the total 1938 expenditure
on roads in • the Township of Stephen
having been read three times be pas-
sed and signed by the Reeve and
Clerk and the Seal of ,the Corporati-
on attached thereto.
That by-law No. 519' to borrow
certain amounts from the Canadian
Bank of 'Commerce to meet current
expenditures until the taxes are
paid, having been react three times be
passed and signed by the Reeve and
Clerk and the Seal of the Corporati-
on attached.
That a grant of $25 be made to
the Exeter Agricultural Society for
the year 1937,
The Clerk was instructed to order
450 dog tags; the Municipal Weald'
for each member of the Council and
a set of the 1937 Revised Statutes of
Ontario.
• The .following correspondence was
read and filed:
From the Treasury Dept, of Ont.
regarding Railway Tax Distrilintion
for 1937 less charges for maintenan-
ce of indigent insane patients in Pro-
vincial hospitals.
From the Dept. of Public Welfare
regarding order -in -council establish-
ing residence etc. for persons on re-
lief where municipalities cannot ag-
ree with respect to bona fide resid-
ence qualifications.
From the Chief Engineer of• Muni-
cipal Roads with reference to the an-
nual conference on road improvem-
ents to be held in Toronto on the 21,
and 22 of February next.

ing treatments at Victoria Hospital,
London for a week, returned to his
tonne in Zurich on Saturday, and we

fedling much improved.

Taken to Hospital
0;h Tuesday morning, Victor, the
12 Oar old son of Mr. and Mrs.
Mine Hartman of the Goshen Line
south, and who has been suffering an
attack of pneumonia, was taken to

On Tuesday while Charles Thiel
was going to Hensall with the after-
noon maid, over the icy roads he saw
an approaching car, and as Charlie
found it impossible to get out Of the
ruts, he stopped, but the on coming
car did Hoot do so until they collided,
with the usual result of damaged
fenders, etc. All drivers should use
the best of viligence in driving these
slippery roads, as very often the
brakes on the car will not stogy us
just. where we would like to.
NEW WARDEN
Wilmot Haacke, Warden of Huron
is not a native of the County, but
came here as a child with his par-
ents from. Markham, York County,
in 1883. He resides on a fine 200
acre farm on the ,.Huron Road a few
miles east of Goderich. Mr. and Mrs.
1Vlaacke have one daughter married
and living in Goderich. The new
Warden has served hi's township: for
marry years in various capacities. He
has been a member of the township
council for 13 years,. eiglia' au reave.
For 10 years he was a school trustee.
OBITUARY
Late Annie Johnston
The Angel of Death visited the
person of Mrs. Annie Happel, relict
of the late Robert R. Johnston early
on Tuesday morning, and': called the
beloved mother and friend' of many
in this vicinity, to her eternal reward.
Mrs. Johnston 11ad been enniin.ed to
her the past year being the suff-
erer f a few: paralytic, strhkes
, and
she slept peacefully away early Tues-
day morning, aged 81 year, 9 mon-
ths and 19 days. She was born in
Borghoiltz, Hessen, Germany and in
1868 she imiagrated with her parents
and family, to Canada. Here she was
united in marriage with Mr. Robert
R. Johnston,who departed some 21;;
years ago. Her married life being
all spent in Zurich. A very kind and
affectisnate mother to her family and
a vei:y nice person to meet was Mrs.
Johnston, always greeting one with a
smile, The unions was blessed with
three, sons and three daughters, nam-
ely: Mr. William S. and Wellington 5
'tthnston of Zurich, and Orland John-
ston of .Montreal; Mrs. (Dr.) A. J.
MacKinnon and Mrs. A. J. Ralbfieisch
of Zurich, •orad Miss Victoria, who has
predeceased for some years. The
funeral i5 being held privately on
Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at
the house, followed .by interment in
