Huron:
Atter consultation with outstanding ternperance inn in this riding, I am in
the tield for election to the Legislature as an lndepe.ndent Temperance Candidate.
Theeyes of the Province are on thi.s Riding. The Canada Temperance Act
passed by an overwhelming majority of the people a this County has been flouted
'by the Hepburn Government, and beet r oorns have been established within its
bounds in defiance of thewill of that 414.a.j ority. The people were not allowed to
vote on the question of establishing ,Ehese beer morns in what had been recognized
for many years as dry territory; but 'now that they are established , the people are
told they must take a vote to get -lid of them
And if a vote should be taken, who wiT1 be'allowecl to vote? Only the people
of the Towns in which the beer Tooms are situated. The people of the Townships
surrounding these towns, who ate affecte d by them almost as much as if they were.
residents of the Towns, will have no voice in the decision.
Is this Democracy? Is it Fair Plar? Do we have to stand for i:t?
In the circumstances forted upon -us by the politicians, the only -way to secure,
a clear expression of the will OT the people is by the candidacy of a nonparty man
placing this question before the electors as the paramount issue..
The candidate endorsed by the so-called "Temperance Federation Convention"
was upheld by some forty -voters a that convention. Wheie are votes going
from the thousands of temperance people who never heard of a -temperance con-
vention" being held? not an, by any means, to either of the party candidates this
time.
This is an opportunity, -perhaps the nearest we will ever :get :to taking liquor •
out of party politisc.
Voters, do you believe :in letting a few men at Toronto impose .their will up-
on the thousands of free and..intelligent electors of this Count -y?
The yes of the Province -are on Hu ron. If we do not :speak up for ourselves,
who will?
