In Magistrate's Court
At `Goderich on April 22nd, tw
young farm hands of fine phisigiie
Clifford .and George Thornton, broth
,ers, were sentenced to three month
.at hard labor, for the theft of wheat
and barley, totalling 230 bushels,
from Robt. ,Siznpson, farmer hi the
Brussels district. Clifford had plead-
ed guilty to seven charges and Geo-
rge three. "You stole this grain wil-
fully, there is no excuse," said Mag-
istrate -J. A. Makins to the young
both first offenders. Because of the
absence from town of Crown Attor-
ney D. E. Hohnes, John Weiss and
Fred 'Littlechild, charged with chic-
ken theiveing, were remanded' for
one week. Bail was fixed at $1,000,
the accused men being returned to
jail. In convicting and granting sus-
pended sentence to Jas. Steele, of
2altford, the magistrate took him
severely to task for dragging his
'son, Clayton, age 16, lap the tangle
Both were accused of attempting to
steal a quantity of coal and wood
from the C.N.R. They were caught
by Nightwatcbman McAllister. The
boy was acquitted. For the reason
that he bad quit his job without giv-
ing
iv
ing notice, and thus had broken his
contract, Arthur Elliott, young farm
hand, lost his case. He sought to re-
cover $39.40 from Wm. Jowell, Col-
borne Twp. farmer, under the Master
and Servants Act. Ellioutt walked
out on the first day of the maple sy-
rup season, just when things were
shaping up for a lot of fun, also a
lot of hard work the fanner said.
