Celebrates 85th Birthday
Zurich, Ont., April 21st, 1937—
Mr. Daniel Smith is to -day, Wednes-
day; quietly celebrating his 85th
,birthday, at the home of his son and
daughter, -in-law, Mr. and Mrs. C. L.
Sniitli;ot Zurich. i'Ir. D. Smith, who
is one of the oldest residents of Zur-
ich.' was born in Rainham Township,
Haldimand County, on April 21st,,
1852, being a son of the late Peter
I Schmidt, who immigrated from Ger-
many, and • his wife Catherine Otter -
man, of Alsace, France. In 1874 the
family moved to Wilmot Township,
\Waterloo .County, where Daniel later
kook over .the 123 -acre farm 23ia
miles south-west of New Hamburg,
bn the old Huron Road. In 1879 he
/was united in marriage to Catherine
(Hoch of New Dundee, who passed on
'in 1895. Surviving were four sons,
)of which the eldest Edgar passed on
lin 1903. In the spring of 1902 Mr.
(Smith sold his farm in Wilmot and
(during that summer purchased the
\fine 210 acre farm on the Blue Water.
(Highway, Hay Township, now owned
'by his son. Clayton, moving thereon
in September of that year. After suc-
cessfully farming for some years, and
,also was known far and wide as a
\fruit grower, having a peach orchard
lof about 2,000 trees, he sold the farm
Ito his elder living son Clayton 0.
His two other sons are: Chester L.

Irvin D. of Hamilton, U.S.L. auto

Smith has one sister, Mrs. Jacob Thiel
of Kitchener, also six grandchildren.
,Ile is a very active and bright man
for his age, enjoys life to its fullness,
does considerable reading each day,
`mostly in the seriptures. possesses a
wonderful memory of dates of past
