estate of John Decher, the elder, late
of the Village of Zurich in the Co-
unty of Huron, Farmer, deceased,
who died on or about the twentieth
day of March A. D. 1937, are re-
quired to forward their claims duly

NOTED DOCTOR DIES
•Ontof Huron County's best known,
and beloved. Doctors, J. B. Whitely,
of. Goderich died on Monday evening
in his 82nd year. A graduate of Tor-
onto University in 1883 Dr. Whitely
was the sole survivor but one of a
class of 21. On the 26th of April
this year he would have cempleted
5'4 years in the practice of medicine,
'5•1 years of them in the town of God-
erich. Tt was his proud hoist that he
had been the attending doctor at
more than 4,000 births. Possessed of
a remarkable .physique acid general
.personality erenowed for his hearty
welcome and handshake, he brought
sunlight and comfort into thousand;
of homes. As a harness horseman he
was widely known and held in high
est esteem throughout Ontario and
beyond'. He was a :breeder and owner
of fast horses, most famous of which
were "Sid Hai," 2.06x4,. and "Ram -

' OBITUARY
Mrs. Mark Bender
•
On March 31st Mrs. Mark Bender
passed away at the home of her only
daughter, Mrs. Omer Berney, north
of Corbett, Stephen ''Twp. Her maid-
en name was Mary Platzer and she
was married fifty years ago to Mr.
Mark Bender, whe predeceased her
11 years and her only soh Ezra -died
15 years ago. After a short service
at the house the funeral service- was
held in the Evangelical church, Dash-
wood, where she had been a member
far many years. Rev. Craftier condu-
cted the service at the, church 'and
cemetery on the Goshen .Line. Bea-
utiful flowers bore silent testimony
oof the love and respect of many fri-
ends for one who was always ready
to help anyone. Besides her only
daughter, Mrs. Berney she is surviv-
ed by one grandson Lloyd and one
granddaughter Mrs. Earl Cook, ' of
Markdale and one sister Mrs. J. I es-
ner, of the 146 con., Hay Twp. five
nephews, Messrs. Fred Platzer,. Wni..
and Ernie Gross, of Blyth; John and
Ezra Bender of Lrashwood; also five
nieces, Mrs. B. Price, Mrs. E. Steph-
en, Mrs. E. Eckstein, -of Dashwood:
Mrs. Win. Koehler of Zurich and Miss
Platzer, of Pontiac, Mich.
Death of Noah Dietrich
Noah Dieterich, a life long resident
of. the 12th Con., Stephen, died sud-
denly on April 1st, at the age of 51
years and 5 days. About 8 weeks ago
he fell and fractured his leg and had
been confined to his bed since. IIe
suffered heart attack and died shortly
after. Was born on the faun on whi-
ch he died, being a son of the late Mr
and Mrs. Law. Dieterich. 23 years
ago he was united in marriage with
Christina Foster, his bereft widow,
who with five sons all at home and
three daughters, mourn the floss of a
loving husband and father. He is al-
so survived by three brothers, Geo.
of /Sarnia; Christopher of Dashwood
and William of Zurieh; three sisters.
Mrs. Chas. Lindendield of Parkhill,
Mrs. Geo. Fisher, of Preston and Mrs
A. McCann, of Mt. Carmel. The fun-
eral was largely attended and was
held to Mt. Carmel church. Requiem
high mass was sung by Rev. Er. Fog-
erty. Interment in Mt. Carmel cem-
etery. The pall bearers were eight
nephews of deceased.

Geo. M Grant, telegraph agent and
issuer ofe,niotor licenses of Exeter,
has been',appointed as leader of the
lien'sall band. Mr. Grant will continue
his tilxeter duties. He had his first
experience' with the Glenco Band
which he entered at the age of 10.
At 1$,,ehe was a member of the regi-
mental band of the 135 (Middlesex)
battalion. His parents did not then
give permission for him to go over -
ides on account of his youth but less
than two years later he accomplished
overseas the 63rd Battery as trump-
eter: Fran 30 trumpeters he was
chosen to sound the royal salute to
Ids late" Majesty King George. He
still. hae the trumpet and the royal
colors used on that occasion.
Man Sinks in Soft Ground
Last. Monday morning Peter Stew-
art had quite - an experience and if
help had not arrived it would have
proved more serious. He was going 1
to J. McEwen's for maple syrup and
instead of going down the highway,
decided to cross some vacant lots just
south 'of town. The ground was so
wet and soft he began to sink in -the
mud and could not raise his feet and
in trying to turn around fell, which

called for help and after some time
succeeded in drawing the attention
of a neighbor who immediately went
to assistance. Dr. Smillie was called
