A NEW FLAG STAFF
The Zurich town hall is to have a:
new flag staff, as .Mr. Eickmeier, the
painter, has taken down the old staff
which has stood the test :,.for many
ears, but is still good, only warped
hen the old staff was taken down
and the ball at the top <•; removed,
two old documents were found in the
ball, the one bore the folloVrig writ-
ing: "Zurich September Oh, 1890.
This- flag staff was raised :op, the a-
bove dame in the presence of the fol-
lowing:—Fred Hess, Reeve •nf. Hay

Weber, bricklayer; J. C. Kalbfleisch,
contractor; John Dumart; I iiry P.

so enclosed a small hand poster pub-
lished by the "Utica Globe” ahnounc-
ing -of their publishing of the sensati-
onal Burchell murder trial at ',Food -
stock, Ont., which began on Septem
ber 18th, 1890. This latter anal is
quite fresh in the memory of many
of our older residents. We would
make mention of of Mr. Daniel -Smith
of town, your publisher's father, who
art ,the time lived less than •twenty.
miles from Woodstock, and who had
an elder brother, John D. Smith, who
acted as a juror in this largely pub-
licised murder trial.

„WA LiERALOP
The Flying Dutchmen of Zurich,
played an exhibition game in Heneei i
last Ricky and won over the Hensall
"old boys" 4 to :1, The locals were
not able to place a complete team
of regulars on ,the field and as a re-
sult were far from full strength.
Hensall's team was comprised of
members of their club of a fe* yearn
ago- with a, few exceptions. It was
a nice game to watch and as the
score would indicate, was close eno-
ugh to be interesting. Kerslake and
Joynt was the Hensall battery while
Heideman and Gascho performed for,
Zurich. Heideman, the Zurich pit-
cher was in rare form and pito heel
one of his best games of the sea:o.,
':y striking out 18 Hemall butters,.
Jana allowing only two huts.
THROWN FROM WAGGON
Thrown from his wagin when
struck by a motor truck, Evelyn Bro-
derick, of Exeter, and recently from
the Parr Line, Hay Twp., was badly
cut and bruised about the face. FId:
was returning from delivering a load
of.,g'rain to Hensall when the rear of
his wagon was struck by a truck driv-
en by H. Chamberlain, St. Catharines
and owned tri that city. The .reach of
ethewagon was broken and the horses
with the front wheels bolted. Mr.
Broderick landed on his head and a
portion.of flesh was ripped from the
forehead and he' was otherwise cut
and bruised. He was brought to the
doctor's office where a number of
stitches were required to close the
wounds. It is claimed the driver of
the :truck misjudged the distance in
turning out'to pass and the front of
the rack struck the wagon.
