On rlhnday, July 6th the Iocal
boys motored to Goderich to play a
scheduled game with the Sailors of
that town. As your correspondent
sees it, it was a farce from beginning
to end. To tell the story in as few
words as possible, we will onry point
out a few glaring examples of poor.,
officiating, of which 'this Ieague seems
to have plenty and some to spare.
All _games are to be called at 6
p.ni. and not later than 6.15. If either
club have not a full team, 9 players,
ready to take their positions in the
field, the game shall be forfeited to
the team which is ready at the call of
Play Ball. The Godes ch team diel
not appear at the ball park until
.nearly 7 pan., and even at that time,
they were short of one man. Did

the umpires call the game at the ap-
pointed time? No. Did they forfeit
the game to the, Zurich Club which
was on the playing field before 6 p.m
No. Well, play eventually got under
way about 7 o'clock, but the Goder-
ich team used a man who is not reg -
iatered with the team and never can
be. Therefore Goderict DID NOT
have a full team ready for pray. Did
the .umpires allow this sort of thing
to go and not' do anything bauot
it?: •They did. Lf this sort of officiat•
?z-
ing or lack of officiating is to be over
looked what will the game develop
into. .As played now its a farce, .for 5t.
no other. reason than that the umpires
do not enforce the rules, and let
,things get completely out of hand.
Do the patrons of .the grand old
game get their money worth, and are
they .completely satisfied to sit aro-
und from a .half to thre-quarters of
ari.;hour waiting for play to begin,
and then witness only 5 innings of
play? Most emphatically not, and
nothing will kill the sport as quickly
as the above mentioned happenings.
Your correspondent has no com-
plaint corning as far as the umpiring
goes, for the most part, after the
grime is actually under way, but its
this delay and fooling around before
hand. There is only one way to han-
dle a ball game and that is, enforce •
,the rules of the game..
' Well, the Zurich boys were handed
a bad trimming by the Goderich
Sailors the score being 11-2. Poor
fielding was in a large measure the
downfall of the locals. Practice and)
more practice seems to be the order
of the day. Boys, you can never get
too much of it so hear down and get
the bad ball out of your system.
Seaforth plays here .an the 9th.
