Meisner, A Free Man
After serving 18 months in prison
for a crime he didn't commit, David
1Vleisner, 56 -year-old Kentucky gam-
bler, is a free man. At London,
shortly before midnight on Friday
night a jury of 12 men acquitted
Meisner on charges of armed robbery
and kidnapping John S. Labatt in
August 1934. Justice J. C. Kingstone
immediately discharged hint from cus
tody. The jury listened to evidence
for nearly five days and deliberated
for seven hours and 15 minutes be-
fore deciding Meisner's fate. When
the foreman announced: "We have
agreed unanimously that the prisoner^
is not guilty", spontaneous cheers and
applause shattered the accustomed
decorum of the courtroom. It was
the first One in the memory of local
officials that a courthouse audiencce
interrupted a court with cheers.
1 eisner, who sat white -lipped and
nervous in the prisoner's box, didn't
even smile when be heard the verdict
lie nervously wiped beads of nervi
ous prespiration from his forehead
and nodded briefly to his counsel.
He left' the next •day for Windsor,
to visit his sister and will likely go
+a t to join hia wife in Covingtolt,
l%ntucky..
