We regret to learn that our genial
friend, Mr. George Hess of Hensall,
had the misfortune of getting his
hand quite severely cut by the paper
cutter of their printing office depart-
ment. It is an experience that no
one should like to have, and Mr.
Hess is fortunate that he did lose his
hand, as this big knife is always very
sharp and with its weight and lever-
age a man's 'hand wou1d be a very
small item for it to go through. We
trust that Mr. Hess will soon be re-
covered from his accident.
Monday evening .there was a rather
smaoky air in the northern part of

were on the job and took care that
the fire was confined to the chimney
only, as the walls were becoming
quite warm at places. It is a great

A WORSE WINTER
We frequently hear that this i••
the most severe winter in history, we
were in conversation the oL:ler day
with a retired citizen in the person
of Mr. John P. Rau, who advised u:;
that we have had worse winters to
his time, and we quite well remember
of the winter of 1904 when there
was no mail or train througe Hensall
for eight days. No freight train for
eighteen days. Mr. Rau, who was
proprietor of the Commercial hotel
in Zurich at that time advised us
that he had a barrel of whiskey from
Windsor on order and it took nine-
teen days to get here by railway.
After a second thought we were just
wondering what woulcl take place
this winter if a whole barrel of Can-
adian whiskey were to arrive in town
and would be legally sold at 5 cents a
glass over the counter. Surely the
town would go "Whopee".
Back From Florida
Sandy Elliott and H. O. Southcott

evening last after being on a five
week motor trip to Florida and also
a -visit to Cuba. From basking in
the sunshine and bathing in the warm
waters of the ocean they arrived
• home after a trip of three days and
a half to find the mercury was reg-
istered fourteen below zero and the
trip for the last .few miles was the -
1 ough banks of snow higher than
their car with only a one-way track.
They were lucky to arrive on the
day they did as the day ,before the
roads were blocked and then next
evening they were again filled in
with snow. Mr. Elliott brought a-
long with him a companion by the
name of "Oscar" a young crocodile.
But Oscar is not enamoured with
this cold weather and does not show
much signs of Life. He is being kept
comparatively warm near one of the
radiators at the Ford garage. Un-
fortunately 1114r. Southeott contracted
