ITEMS OF LOCAL 1NTE
Well, January gave us some storm
and cold this year but it went out
nicely on Friday. Some one suggest-
ed that if January has five moons it
will be a rough month. This year
such was the case. But by the looks
of February it must be all moons.
Have you noticed on the calendar.
that February this year has five Sat-
urdays, and by the time that will
happen again a new generation will
likely be doing things here.
A very painful accident happened
to Mrs. Herbert Mousseau of town.
the other evening when ah the local
rink in some was she fell on the ice
and fractured her right arm near
the wrist. This is one of a Huber of
injuries sustained at this popular
place of amusement. In fact this
winter there has been more fatalities
at this place than for a long time,
or probably ever in history. We wish
Mrs. Mousseau a speedy recovery.
The weatherman is giving this.
community an abundance •of snow,
as Monday ,night's storm from the
east practically filled every possible
vacancy up with more and more of
the beautiful white. Roads are !block
ed in every direction, and there is no
place worse than the notorious Blue
Water Highway which has become
impassable for man or beast. The
farmers who are obliged to go to
neighbors take on foot through the
fields. Never in the memory of old
timers have these roads been so con -
jested. This is probably dune to the
Provincial snow plows going through
earlier in the winter and piled up
the snow on the roadsides and now
'with these storms everything is filled
up and impossible to get through
even with horses. The road 'from
here to Hensell has also been filled
in again, and traffic is paralyzed on
the No. 4 Highway. The plows had
worked up as far as Exeter on Tues-
day, and will have their hands good
and full to open it up to Clinton the
next few days. The weather is ex-
tremely cold, 11 below this Wednes-
day morning with a terriffiic gale
!blowing, and Lord only known what
the weatherman will give us next.
GRAND CARNIVAL
The annual Carnival was held at
the Zurich Rink on Wednesday even-
ing of last week, with a good attend-
ance of spectators as well as a large
Slumber taking part in the contests
for the various prizes, which were
all keenly contested. The weather-
man was somewhat more fat orable
than the previous week at which
time it was originally intended to be
held. ollawing are the prize winners:

Sunday was Candeimes Day or the
day when the bear comes out and
looks for his shadow and if it is a
clear day and sees his shadow, back
he goes for another six weeks. This
year he had no trouble in seeing the
ehadow as it was -rite and clear, . but
owing to the extreme cold it was not
comfortable to be out. Anyway, we
are not looking for anything . like
spring or summer for six weeks to
come.
GOOD ROADS ASSOC MEET
The .annual convention of the On-
tario. Good Roads Association will -be
held at Toronto next week. It will be
the 34th convention of the assosiati-
on which has been held since 1902,
When it was reorganized. The conven-
tion seems likely to be of consider-
able interest, as he vexed question of
township and county roads will be
discussed.. One resolution to be put
forward will urge that, on the gro-
unds of economy, township and ,co-
unty road systems should be merged,
because this, it is clairned, will save
duplication on the matter of road
iiiachinery and so reduce the. general
iverhead.'
LIONS BRANCH.)T CLINTON.
The possibility of a branch of the
Lions Club being formed at Clinton
was suggested at their meeting at,
Goderich the other evening when the
Club entertained members of the
Huron County Council. Reeve George
Elliott, of Clinton, suggested that it
would considerably lighten the work
of the Goderich and Seaforth bran-
ches, which are covering the work a-
mong crippled children in Huron Co-
unty. Chief Lion Hibbert stated that
if Reeve Elliott .believed the time
was ripe the Goderich club would be
only too glad to sponsor a club at
Clinton. The officials in charge of
the work among crippled children,
reported that 54 cases had. been car-
ed for at an average expense of $1,-
200
1.200 a year, since the Lions took over
the work four years ago.

The claim the sight of a horse with
a broken leg and blood pouring from
its wounds produced severe nervous
shock is made by Doris Fetherston
-and her father Ernest, of Bayfield,
in a writ issued in the county court
on. Saturday. The claihn is the sequel
to anaccident on Richmond street,
between Piccadilly and Oxford sts.,
On December 17, last year, when a
car driven. by Doris Fetherston and
a horse, drawing a Canada': Bread
wagon, collided. The bread company
and Charles Cowan, London, who was
,driying the Wagon, are named defen-
dants in the action. The plaintiffs
ask a total of $1,500. Mr. Fetherstor
wants the court to award him $500,,:
and his daughter asks for $1,000..
She says she was bruised in the colli-
sion, and in addition suffered nerv-
ous shock which has incapaciated her.
The couple allege the driver of the
wagon was negligent and that by
turning his horse he caused the ani
Mal to collide with- the auto. They
further claim he did not keep a,
`proper lookout. Howard Cluff issuect:
the writ on behalf of the Bayfield
-residents. 1
