Presentation
At the annual School Picnic of -S.
S. No. 11 Hay, Mr. and Mrs. Whitney
Brokenshire were very p'leas'antly
surprised when they were presented
with a very handsome chair. The
occasion marked the end of the tenth
year of Mr. Brokenshire's .term of
teaching at that -school and who has
recently resigned. The following
address was read by Miss Eileen Pat-
terson while Hugh Hendrick and
Blaise Ducharme mad e the present-
ation:
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Brokenshire :-
For many years we have been gati -
ering here for our annual scaool pic-
nic and to -day on our last gathering
together, we wish you to know how
much we have enjoyed your presence
through the years you have been with
us. The children, to whom you have
given part and in some cases their
!entire public school education, will
surely collie to realize the valte of
the things you have taught' thein
when they become men and women,
and have to face the battle of life.
The parents of this section appreciate
the way you have so consciously per-
formed your duties and the feeling
of trust they felt while their child-
ren were in your care. And no one
in the section has been blind to the
little extra things you have done in
and about the school to save expense
and bother to the section. And now
that you are about to leave us, we
wish you all happiness and good for-
tune in your future work.
As a little remembrance from S.S. tween BruceCield and Egmiondville at
No. 11 Hay, we 'wish you to accept a cost t of $20,000.. This will bring
this gift. --Signed by pupils, parents nearly 70 of permanent

Huron County Council
At the June session of Huron 'Co-
unty 'Council which convened at the
Count 'House, Goderich last week,
$10,000 was granted to the -Canad-
ian Red Cross Society and that the
amount :be divided among 23 branch-
es of the society. 19 branches in the
county will each receive $487.75,
while .the 'other four get less. The
Council authorized the purchase of
an automatic fire alarm system for
the county home at Clinton, to cost
$1,885. The institution recently was
bequeathed two legacies totaling $2,-
000 and this ,money will be used to
protect the lives of the ageS inmates
and their home. The services of Ross
Johnston, corn borer inspector, were
dispensed with for the balance 'of the
year, it being too late to do further
work. Reeve J. W. Gamble, chair-
man of the agricultural committee,
gave an encouraging report en the
organization of township and county
units of the Federation of Agricult-
ure. All of the 16 townships in the
,county have now been thoroughly or.
ganized with the county branch, with
Fred Watson, reeve of Stanley, as
president. Only $•358 of the .$1,000
grant allotted for this purpose were
used. L, E. Cardiff, M.P. addressed
council on the farmer's place in Can-
ada's war effort,- and urged a fair
deal for agriculture. He said the co-
untry's big wheat surplus would ul-
timately prove a big factor in achiev-
ing final vocto'ry. The county jail
turnkey's salary was increased from
$900 to $1,080.. The ayoptton of the
