IS LAID TO REST
After a lifetime of endeavoring the
project for the Great Ltkes Waterway
Narciese Cantin, 69 year old founder
of St. Joseph, was buried in St. Pet-
er's Cemetery, French Settlement,
last Wednesday forenoon. This, the
ending of a spectacular and anrbiti-'
ous life, which never took defeat for
an answer when he was convinced of
being on the right side of the argu-
ment. Besides members of his im-
mediate family, including children
and grandchildren from Montreal and
Detroit, mourners were residents of
the French Settlement who shared
in his departure. St. Peter's church
was filled almost to overflowing as
Rev. 0. Martin, pastor. solemnized
requiem high mass for the man who
had spent $100,000 to build up St.
Joseph. Active pallbearers were Nel-
son Masse, Frank Denomme, Filbert
Denomme, Armand Denomme, Fred
Dueharme and Theophile Bedard.

Huron County Council
Has Nice Surplus
The: County of Huron had an act-
ual .surplus of ?7,627 in 1939, It was
disclosed in the auditors' report tab-
led by Treasurer A. H. Erskine i.n 1
County Council last week. Of this:
surplus the County Home earned i
$2,190. The institution is now more
than self sustaining. The profit shown
on hogs alone for the year was $544.-
56.
544:56. Reeve Trewartha, Clinton, under
inquiries, asked for a detailed state-
ment of the cot to the county of the
equalization assessment appeals. The
answer was two local judges, $140
each; outside judge, $256.10; covert
reporter, $11.2; clerk of the court $40
court crier $40, constables $50; co-
unty solicitor $300; total $1,078,10.
Reeve Watson, (Stanley) asked what
was the total monies paid to Traffic
Officer N. Lever in 1939, it was $2,-
067428. The total paid the four co-
unty hospital for indigent patients
in 1939 was: Clinton $347; Goder-
ich, $2,412; Seaforth $1,928; Wing -
ham $778 (not including grants) By
a recorded vote of 22 to 7, after a
lengthy discussion, the salary of Co.
Engineer Paterson was increased
from $2,760 to $3,3200 by the noun -
tit. It is in the nature of a restorat-
ion of salary cuts in depression years
the salary at one time being $3,600.
Likewise the salaries of county police
officers Were increased to $1,206 and
$500 car allowance. Previous salaries
ranged from .$6.00 to $1.200 with,.:
$300 car allowance. Under the new
arrangement the officers are to po-:
vide their own automobile, repairs,
gasoline, .etc.
Reforestation Out!
Reforestation in Huron County, talk-
ed about these many years, received)
another setback on Friday's session}
of Comity Council when that buds :
viuld tiotivii a (notion to place $2,0001
in this year's estimates with which to I
get the program under way. The
vote was 15 to 10, Warden Feafan ,
expressed his disappointment. Last
year's cocuneil agreed upon the pur-
chase of plote of 100 acres of waste;
land in various parts of the conrnty
ler reforestation. The sum of $5,000
was voted to get the scheme under,
way but the money was never aut"i-
orited by by-law.
