NON -CHRISTIAN POWERS TO
VANISH
Non -Christian civilization of the
past, no 'matter how great their gro-
wth, always have vanished, ht. lion.
R. B. Bennett, former Canadian
prime minister, told a joint meeting
of the Royal Empire Society and the
Cai adian..Club at Montreal: "History
shows non-Christian powers disapp-
peered," said Mr. Bennett. "As a re-
sult Christian concepts have domin-
ated world civilization. It ns well to
think of that now—that the principl-
es for which Christian civilization
has stood have dominated the world
though in the world there have been
millions more non-Christians than
Christians. Today you are not fight-
ing for another people, for another
land, but for maintenance of Christ-
ian civilization," he said.
QUINT GUARDIAN RESIGNS
It is learned that Dr. Allan R. Da-
foe, the popular doctor of Callander,
-Ont., has submitted to the Ontario
Governnnnent his resignation as guard -
j :an of the Dionne Quintuplets, but
will continue to act as physician to
the children. It. has been rumored
that counsel for Dr. Defoe and Oliva
Dionne (father of the quints) had
reached an agreement regarding the
court actions instituted by Dionne.
It is said that Dionne was willing to
drop bis snit provided Dr. Dnfot, wo-
uhfl resign as a guardian but remain
as doctor for the quints.

The Amherstburg; Echo claim, than;
nowhere in the world can a Teeter
parade of shipping be seen Clan a-
long the Amherstburg waterfront.
During the 1939 season of navigation
22,369 ships passed that point, even
exceeding by over 4,000 the number
of passeges art Detroit and Windsor a
few miles away on the same water-
way. The records for the Panama
Canal show only 5,903 passages for
the last year. Imagine what mischief
a submarine or two could mawe with
the shipping of the Great Lakes if
war should ever invade these waters.

LAWS ON GLARING LIGHTS
Traffic police are expressing sur-
prise that many motorists still pro-
fess ignorance of. a new section of
the Hig'hwa'y Traffic Act aimed at
curbing galling headlights at night.
Many officers regard the new law,
which went into effect about- four
months 'ago, as one of the most im-
portant in the entire set of rules
governing traffic on Ontario roads. It
requires motorists to turn on the dim-
mers, or "down beam" of their head-
lights when within 500 feet of a veh-
Acle coiling from the opposite direct-
ion, Its purpose is to make law of
what has long been regarded as a
courtesy of the road, not to blind an
approaching driver with the modern
powerful "upbeam" headlights which
