Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Hoperoft re- ceived word that their son, Fred has been promoted to First Class Chief Petty Officer. Huron County Council • "The 'County is in an excellent fin- ancial condition", declared Warden Fred Watson, in. an address at the session of Huron County Council which opened on Tuesday, November 14th. With $65,000 invested this year in Victory bonds -325,000 from general account and $44,000 from the highways account—the County has an investment of $170,000 in these bonds. The Warden commend- ed the Seventh Victory Loan organiz- ation in Huron for going over the objective by over $600,000. The road commission had inspected the County roads and bridges twice dur- ing the year, and looked at some of the roads in the State of Michigan. He congratulated the County Horne committee on the work dote there, the laundry equipment is a credit to the committee and was badly in need County Treasurer A. H. Erskine, after submitting the financial state- ment, said there would be a surplus estimated at $27,601-24 in the gen- eral a.ccourut at the end or tie year. A petition from a group of farm - ens in the county requesting that the Council ,submit a resolution to the Ontario Department of Game and Fisheries asking for new regulations and closer supervision of fox. -hunting and a closed season for loses from March 1 to Oct. 31, sso that farmers may be safeguarded from the depre- dations of hunters. The road commission reported that the Fthel bridge has been complete( and the work on the approaches near- ly finished. Mrs. Walter Heusie of Detroit, is spending some time at the home of her mother, IVIrs. John P. Rau. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Volland of Goderich, were week -end visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Schilbe. An auction sale of the real estate of the late Mrs. Annie Desjardine will be held in' Zurich on Saturday afternoon on the property. Pte. George Grenier who has teen on the Isle of Bermuda ror some months, is enjoying a few weeks at, the home of his, parents, Mr. and Mrs Wm. Grenier. F. 0. Allan E. OBITUARY This week we record the passing of a well and favourably known cit- izen of Zurich and community., in the person of Mr. John P. Rau, who be- came ill and Nos,s taken to at. Jos- eph's Hospital, Landon, where he passed away On Friday, November 17th, in his SOthyear. Mr. Rau, who was born in Stanley Township, on the Blue Water Highway, was a member of the pioneer samily who settled there in the early stages of settlement, and as a boy knew all the hardships of pioneer life. He was of a very joys.). and pleasant dis- position and had many warm friends who are sorrowing of his departure. Was very public spirited and had the interests Of the community at heart. Serving .for some years an the Hay Township Council, a Director of the [-lay Mutual Fire Insurance Company the Zurich Agricultural Society, and later a member of. the Hay Township Board of Health. • As a.young man he was a resident of Port Huron, having been employed on the well known Sarnia -Part Huron tunnel. For a time ire was a commercial fisherman and for a goodly number of !years was proprietor of the Commercial Hotel, Zurich, then moving' on the fine farm about two miles north of town, till 19.29 when he retired to Zurich. :Surviving are four sous and a daughter besides his sorrowing widow; they are Morris and Gordon of Detroit; Lawrence, St. Clair Shores, Mich; and Leonard, Zurich; Mrs .Walte.r Heusin, .erross Point, Mich. There are nine gramrchildron and three great -grand children. The funeral took place from the family residence, Zurich, on Monday morn- ing at 10 o'clock to St. Boniface rz. C. Church :for Funeral Mass, with inter - merit following in the adjoining cents etery. Rev. Father J. Lacier offi- ciated and was assisted by Rev. Fr. Martin from St. Joseph's parish and Rev. Fr.
