Pfew- What a heat, we hear al-
most everyone say these days, as the
weatherman sure dishes up a lot of
heat these days, with the mercury
around 90 to 94 in the shade, and
dear only knows what it would be
in the hot sun. The sun is just a
blistering heat and many people have
had to stop work being overcome
with the heat which is terrible. There
seeins to be no letup for the present.
Was Called to the Bar
We join the many friends of Mr.
Paul A. H. Hess, B. A., son of Mr.
and Mrs. Andrew F. Hess of town,
who was called to the bar at Os-
good Hall, Toronto to the bar on
good Rall, Toronto, on June 15th,
as a Barrister and Solicitor of the
Supreme Court of Ontario and is
associated with the firm of Smith,
Rae, Greer & Cartright of Toronto.
Ms. Hess has always been a very
brilliant scholar, having taken his
public school at Zurich, and High
school at Exeter, then to Toronto
University.
Observes 93rd Birthday
Mrs. Mary Edighofer, who makes
her home with her daughter, ,Mrs.
Wm. Yule, of Fullerton, and visited'
members of her famali, in Mitchell
for a couple of weeks recently, Wed-
nesday last readied the grand 'old
age of 93 years. Mrs. Edighoffer
;pent the biggest part of her lifetime
in Blake where she lived before she
retired to Fellarton a few yeasts ago.
The event was marked on Sunday ifol-
l.owing when relatives gathered to
extend congratulations and hopes for
her continued good health and inter-
est in life, which is so cherastic 'of
her, Knitting a pair of sacks about
every three days for the soldiers is
another of her aecomplishntents,
DIES AT EXETER
William Charles Rivers of Exeter,
passed away in. Victoria Hospital,
London, in his 80th year, he was
born in England and came to Can-
ada when a boy and 38 years ago
he and wife and family took up res-
idence in. Exeter where he had a
meat market for years. Mrs. Rivers
predeceased 14 years ago, surviving
are four sons and two daughters,
one son being H. C. Rivers of Exeter
Rev. A. B. Irwin officiated at the
funeral.

The Soviet Information Bureau,
released the following.. statistics of
,the war that more than 7,800,000
Germans have been killed and cap-
tuied in the three years of fighting.
During that same period .Russian los-
ses totaled 5,300,006 men killed,
missing -or captured. 'The Germans
lost 70,000 tanks, 60,0.00 airplanes
and more than 90,000 pieces of artil-
lery, while -Russian losses were con-
siderable lighter.

Goderich—'I'he use' of farm trucks
by farm youths as a means .of trans-
por'tati'onto dances was roundly
scored by Crown Attorney Holmes
in requesting that a fine be imposed
of a youth near Dungannon' for
failing to .turn to the lef when over-
taking another vehicle. The other ve•
hicle was also a truck driven. by
Gordon Watson returning from the
same dance at Dungannon. One was
fined $5 'and costs.
