Domrfion Day, July lst.
Saturday,July 1st will be ob-
served as .Dominion Day and a public
0 holiday in Zurich, and has been pro-
claimed as such by the Village Fath-
ers. The first reports were to the eff-
ect that Monday was to be celebrat-
ed instead of Saturday but that is
not correct. Stores will be open in
Zurich on. Friday night, previous to
the holiday.

Son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew F. Hess
of Zurich was called to the oar on
June 15th, 1944, .as Barrister and
Solicitor of the Supreme Court of
Ontario and will be associated with
the firm of Smith, Rae, Greer &
Cartright of Toronto, Ont.
STEPHEN COUNCIL
The Council of the Township of
Stephen met in the Town Hall, Cred-
iton on June 5th with all members
present. Motion that Miss Nola
Fait be actin; Clerk for this meet-
ing. The minutes of the previous me-
eting and special meetings of May
30 and June 1st were read and ad-
opted. A number of correspondence
was read and considered.
Motion: It is with sincere regret
that we receive the resignation. of
Herbert K. Eilber as Clerk and Tre-
asurer of the Corporation. Mr. Eil-
ber has filled these offices for many
years in a careful and corteotrs and
efficient manner and has rendered in-
valuable service to the municipality.
We are very sorry that, by reason
of ill health he is forced to relinqu-
ish the offices. We accept Mr. Eilber's
esig ration as it is his desire that we
do so. We feel that we should not
let this occasion pass without ex-
pressing to Mr. Eilber the sincere
gratitude and appreciation of the
Council and Ratepayers of the Town-.
ship of Stephen for his. many years
of faithful service. It is our sincere
wish that he be speedily restored to
health. We direct that this be prince
ted in the minutes and a copy sent to
Vlr. Eilber.
That By-law No. 000 to appoint
a Clerk and Treasurer for the Cor-
poration to fix his salary and deter-
mine the duties to be performed.
A large number of accounts were
passed and ordered paid.
The Council adjourned to meet a-
gain hi the Town Hall, Crediton, on
etesday, the 4th day of July' at 2
o'clock, p.m.

Successful Children's Day
Children's Day in the Emmanuel
Evangelical church was a noteworthy
success last Sunday. Ideal weather
stimulated a large attendance.
A
good program of recitations, exercis-
es, music was provided by the ,Sun-
day school. The missionary offering
exceeded the objective of $45.00.
The amount so far received totals
over $08.00.
To Hold Bible Conference
A. large and interesting Bible Con-
ference will be held i':,F'"le Mennonite
Church, Zurich on Saturday and Sun-
day ,July 1st and 2:nd., when some
of the 'outstanding speakers of the
denomination will be present and
speak to the large gatherings which
are expected to be present. Thera
will be forenoon, afternoon and ev-
ening sessions of each day and the
public are heartily invited to attend
any or all of the sessions.
Had Happy Birthday
Miss Mary Lou Fritz entertained
a number of school chums on. Tues-
day afternoon when she celebrated
her ninth birthday. The dining room
table was gayly decorated for the oc-
casion and the gifts received were
much appreciated. Those attending
were Lois Heckendorn, Joyce Wit -
more, Phyllis Thiel,Stella Rose, Ar-
lene Haberer, Betty Ann .Gascbo,
Catharine eD'Brien, Katherine K.alb-
iieisch, Jack Haberer and. Donald
O'Brien. All took part in a real
jolly good time. Wishing Mary Lou
many more happy birthdays.
PASTOR'S WI'FE. DIES
Mrs. A.. M. Grant, wife of Rev.
A. M. Grant, of St. Andrew's United
church, Rippon, died .ett her home on.
Sunday, she had undergone an oper-
ation some months ago but had been.
able to ,return to her home. Former-
lvMarjorie Helen Cotton, was born
and raised in Toronto, was very act-
ive in church work. The Grant fam-
ily Baine to Rippen three years ago
from Wroxeter. Besides her husband
there survive three. daughters and a
got* all at home, the funeral was
