Mrs. Harold Thiel who -..ad been
spending severer months with her
husband at Vernon, B. C., has re-
turned home last week.
Pte. Milford Thiel who is in the
Air Force in New Brunswick enjoyed
several days, with his. parents, Mr.. and
Mrs. Elmore Thiel.
The management of the local Dairy
requests that aIT empty milk bottles
be put out or returned as soon as
possible. They are badly needed.
Mr. and Mrs. Hiflyard Lawrence,
of near Mitchell visited at tae home
of the former's parents in town, Mr.
and Mrs. Henry Lawrence, who have
been on the sick list.
Rev. and Mrs. Albert Datars and
family and Mrs. I. Dedels all of
Kitchener visited one day last week
at the home of the former's Mother,
Mrs. Ed. Datars, Sr.
Mr. Elmore Thiel is at present laid
up nursing his right foot which was
injured recently, but with the aid of
crutches, Elmore is able to be out
and around again.
Mr. F. C. Kalbfieisch and son,
Ivan, Mr. Albert C. Kalbfleisch and
Messrs. Roland Geiger and Theodore
Haberer motored to Toronto last we-
ek where they transacted business.
The dance sponsored by the local
Red Cross on Monday evening was
largely attended. The orchestra for
the occasion was the Valley Five of
near Bayfield, who gave a good ac-
count of themselves.
Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Meyers and
-niece, Miss Kathleen Hay and Miss
Ruby Church were at Stratford on
Sunday afternoon visiting with the
former's daughter, Miss Alpho,. who
is nurse -in -training fn. the General
Hospital of that eiiT.
The rather unseasonable mild
weather the past few days makes us
thing of the. glorious spring just a-
round ..the corner.. 'A considerable a-
mount of. wet .snow and .rain fall-
-en the past few days which willgreat
ly help the shortage of the water sit-
uation in many places. -

Mrs. Elizabeth: Chink, a. former
Stanley Twp. resident ntow residing
in Vancouver, BX., has received
word that her youngest son .vertram
is now in Italy:. 11Ii is with the ar-
moured unit..
Passes. at Brucefietd
Charles Henry. Reid died at Bruce -
field on Feb:, lath at New Toronto.
His late wife, Lucinda Reid, passed
away on the same date 29 years ago.
Mr. Reid was well known in his cap-
acity of farmer and cattle drover in
the surrounding district, He had been
in failing health for quite seine time
and contracted pneumonia, passing
away quite suddenly. Surviving are a
daughter and two sons, all of Toron-
to. Also two sisters. Funeral services
were held at Brucefield United church
and intertnent was made in the fam-
ily plot in Bayfield Cemetery.
Fire at Varna
The home of Mr. and 'sirs. John
Smith Sr., was totally destroyed by
fire on Tuesday last at 10 a.m. Mr.
Smith had just left to go to a neigh-
bours, when Mrs. Smite -!oticed
smoke coming from the bedroom.
Having no phone, she went to Ben
Key,s' and phones Brucefield- Fire
Brigade, who were soon on the scene
but little could be done, and very
little was saved, but the brigade
helped to keep the fire under control
and also helped to save adjoining
buildings. The origin of the lire is
'unknown. The loss is heavy as the
insurance is small. The sympathy of
the community goes to Mr. and Mrs.
Smith who are very grateful f9r the
assistance rendered,
AN EDUCATOR
Appointed producer- of educational
broadcasts in the Maritime, Douglas
B. Lusty left the announce staff of
CI3iC's Toronto studios recently to
take up his new post in Halifax. 13e -
fore entering radio, Mr. Lusty was a
teacher and supervisor .of music in
Ontario public schools.
