Here are the jubilant New York Yankees in th eir old familiar pose—cheering themselves after the 2-1 victory over Detroit that clinched American League pennant for the eighth time in the last 11 years—symbolized by Bili Dickey's No. 8, to which grinning Manager McCarthy is pointing. In foreground, left to right, are: Jim. Turner, Bill 3 ohnson, .Dickey, McCarthy, Spud Chandler and Bill Zuber. In back, between Johnson and Dickey, are Tommy Byrne, Bud Metheny and Oscar Grimes. , Yes, He Had Been Around—A Bit! In a Boston -bound plane, a civil- ian was seated next to a young Army flier. "Been around much?" the civilian asked. "Yeah," the Vier casually answered. "I was over Rome. day before yesterday." "Rome? Day before yesterday?" the civilian gasped and started to edge away, cautiously. "And where werb you yesterday?" . , . "Oh, yesterday," the flier shrug- ged, "I was in Iceland." The flier was Lt. Kennedy, the Boston hero, who was going home.—New York Post. PLASTIC INNERTUBE LA/Vie/if-ACK Out of Marvinol, a new rubber substitute developed by the Glenn L. H. Rutledge writes in Nation's Business. The num- ber will be about the same this year. That's 2,000 more than were' killed in action in the United States armed forces in the first twelve months of the war, ' in- cluding Pearl Harbor. This is mentioned here, not to indicate that war, after 'all, is not costly (which it is) but to show how terrifically costly are our daily fires which we allow to happen, and which we sometimes seem to take for granted. In the first two years of the war, bombing of England,-. in- cluding the destructive attacks on London, Coventry and other cities, caused property damage estimated at $408,000,000. In the same period, fires in America caused damage of more than $600,000,000. RECTAL SORENESS AND PILE TORTURE QUICKLY RELIEVED If you are troubled with itching piles or rectal soreness, du not delay treatment and run the risk of letting this condition become chronic. Any itching or soreness or painful pass- age of stool is nature's warning and proper treatment should be secured at Once. This formula which is used internally is a small, easy to take tablet, will quickly relieve the itching and soreness and aid in healing the sore tender spots. Rem -Road is pleasant to use, is highly recommended and it seems the height of folly for any one to risk a painful and chronic pile condition when such a fine remedy may be had at such a small cost. If you try Hem -Reid and are not entirely pleased with the results, your druggist will gladly return your money, Sufferers of bleeding and proCl'uding piles should know Hunkers Herbal Pills treat the cause at its source. The King made the request for Parliament's agreement in a mes- sage read to the House. This carries forward one more step the preparation of the Prin- cess for Queenship and will give her an opportunity to try her hand at statecraft. On the King's last foreign trip, to visit the troops in Nort Africa, she was excluded form the Council of State, headed by the Queen, be- cause she was a minor. She will attain legal majority on her 18 birthday, next April 21. The King's action suggested that he may contemplate another trip some day to visit his forces abroad. Oatmeal Porridge Plus Trilrriliniilin ; s You remember perhaps how Dr. Samuel Johnson defined the word "oats" in his dictionary: "A grain which in England is gen- erally given to horses but in Scot- land supports the people." And you will remember the wonderful retort of Boswell, tvorthy of John- son himself: "Where will you see such horses as in England or such men as in Scotland?" But the legend of the Scots- man's oatmeal porridge is more important than the dish. Any how, as with rice pudding, if you use enough sugar and butter and cream and eggs and raisins and currants and what not, and not too much rice, you can finish up with a quite tolerable rice pad- ding, so doubtless, if you think it's worth while, you can do some- thing about oatmeal porridge too.
