Mr. and Mrs. David Gingersch; Mr,
and Mrs. Jacob Gingerieh and child-
ren motored to Kitchener to attend
the Mennonite conference wMch was
held in that city.
Mrs. William S, Johnston is at
present at the Clinton I•Iostpital and
her many friends wish her a ppeedy
recovery.

day from an eastern point, to 'enjoy

Mr, aed Mrs. Wni. 'Hay and other
friends,
Mr. Jacob Swartzentruber, of
Blake had the; misfortune to fall
while in the act of tying some bags
on a trailer when the binding rope
broke. Mr. Swartzentruber was laid
up for a number of days.
A special meeting of the Zurich
Wonens' Institute will be held at 8
o'clock, on Friday evening, Sept.
17th in the local town hall. All me-
mbers are requested to be present at
this meeting, as important business is
to be transacted.
A Monster Tomato •
Some very fine specimen of tomat-
oes were seen this year, but by far
the biggest' we have had the privilege
of seeing was brought to the Herald
Office the other day by Miss Selina
Steckle, of the Bronson line, which
was grown by her brother eIr. and
Mrs. Oliver Steckle, it weighed 2 -lbs.
and 7 -oz„ and really was a monster.
Arrives Overseas
Mrs. Alberta Bender, Toronto, re-
ceived word informing her that her
son, Lieut. Edwin E. Bender, had
arrived safely overseas. Ted, as he
better known here, was born in Blyth
receiving his earlier education in pub
lie and continuation schoole Here,
later graduating from Westervelt
Business College, London. ,,. Blyth
Standard.
Announcement
Mr. and Mrs. Samuel C. rrey of
Blake, wish to announce he engage-
ment of their third eldest daughter,
Kathleen Mary, to James Frederick
Burdge, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs.
Frederick Burdge, Brucefield.. The
marriage to take place at the Blake
United Church, the latter part of
September.
RESTRICTIONS POSTPONED
Ottawa — The Prices Board' anno-
unced that the effective date -of its
order eliminating manufacture of a
wide range of small bakery items and
the icing of cakes has been postponed
from Sept. 13 to Oct. 11, to provide
for a full and fair review of certain
eb,ioctions frau. bakers in various
part., of Canada.
Attended Wedding
Mr. and Mrs. Chester L. Smith, ac-
companied by their daughter Mae of
London attended the wedding of the
former's niece, Miss Katherine E.
Smith, eldest daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Irvin D. Smith of Hamilton, to
'aieut. Walter Irvin of Cornwall, Ont.
The marriage took place at the Ham-
ilton James Street Baptist church on
Saturday et 4.30 p.m. Rev. P. Zea -
man. former pastor of the Talbot St.
Baptist Church, London, officiated.
After the ceremony the bridal party
and invited guests were received at
the Scottish Rite Temple of that city.
The couple will reside in Toronto.
FLiER DIES WHEN PLANES
COLLIDE
A student pilot was killed when 2
Anson bomber planes from No 9 Ser-
vice School, Centralia, collided in
mid-air five miles south. One of the
planes was able to return to the Cen-
tralia airport, but the olther machine
W11.3 demolished when it plummeted
to earth. The student, said to have
been a flight sergeant who remuster-
ed to air crew, was the only occup-
ant of the plane. An ambulance was
rushed to the scene of the accident,
and the airman's body was taken to
an undertaking home in Exeter.
OBITUARY
Passes at Clinton
Alfred Jervis, well-known resident
of Clinton, died .on Sept. d.Oth aged
81, at the home of his son, Lorne
Jervis, Goderich Twp., after a brief
illness. He was of English parentage,
and was born in Goderich Twp. He
received his education in the Holmes-
ville public school and afterwards en-
gaged in farthing. In 1892 'he marri-
ed Perineiia Halstead who predeceas-
ed in 1931. They farmed near. Holm-
esville, till the last five yeaes when he
came to Clinton to live with his son,
and daughter-in-law, Mr. ann Mrs.
Wilfred Jervis, and was paying a
brief visit with his son, Lorne, when
he suffered a stroke. Was a Liberal,
and. member of the United Church,
Three sons survive, Lorne and Will-
iam of the Hohnesville district and
Wilfred hi Clintoi't, also four grand-

Whereas a resolution was passed
ata meeting of the Council of the
'Township of Hay, August 14th, 194a
granting' the application of the Trus-
tee Board of the Village of Zurich
for submission to a vote or ane elect-
ors; and whereas the debt of the
Zurieb Police Village is as follows:
$1600.00 due on a Promissory Note,
incurred for the purchase of a Fire
.equipment, and a balance of
$1663.87 due on debentures issued
in respect of the local Hydro Electric
System; and whereas the estimated
cost of labor and equipment necess-
ary for the supply of water is
$4,000.00; and -whereas the amount
of the whole rateable property of the
Village of Zurich is $214,22.5 accord-
tng to 'the last revised assessment
Goll; and whereas if said by -Taw
received the assent. of the electors it
is proposed to issue debentures cov-
ering the cost of the work for a
period of ten years at 4e; pee
annum; therefore for the istapose<_
of aforesaid the Council o. the '_ owe -
ship of Hay enacts as follows:
That the proceeding, herein before
referred to and upon the receiving
the assent of the electore on th.
proposed question for providing a
water supply are hereby validated.
That the cost of the same shall
not exceed $4,000.00.
That debentures shall be issues
against the rateable property of the
Zurich Police Village for ten year.
