Irs, Florence Gould of the eastern
part of Hay Township, has ioceived
Word that her on, Cpl. Douglas L.
Gould, is in the hospital in England
suffering with a fractured leg, He
:has been in England almost two years
and was riding a bicycle when he was
forced off tho road by an army truck.
His leg was fractured in three places.

The coal shoot has • been rattling
the past few days as three carloads of
hard coal have arrived with local
dealers, and what nice music it i,
as the most •of coal bins are star in
a very empty condition.
Messrs. Joseph and Albert Hoff-
man; Misses Theresa and Mary Hoff-
man of the Goshen line south, spent
Sunday visiting friends and relatives
at Mt. Cannel. Also visiting with
their brother, Edgar, who has been

TO INSTRUCT IN CANADA
Exeter —;Sgt. Andy Easton, of the
1st Field Park Co., after a brief visit
with his family, will be posted in
Canada as an instructor. agt. East -
ton, a veteran of World :Jar No. 1,
enlisted early he the present conflict
and has been overseas fox• to ariy 3
years. He is full of praise for the
British people, the air force and the
navy. With their husbands at war,
and their children evacuated, British
women go about their war duties with
a smile. Compared with them, he
said, we do not know there is a war
on.
SIMPLIFY BAKERY PRODUCTS •
On and after September 13, the •
Canadian housewife will pay cash
for her bread and cakes and her
choice will .be limited, following re-
gulations issued by the Wartime
Prices and Trade Board. There will
be no more shall pies, for the order
prohibits the manufacture of sweet
goods, cakes or pies weighing less
than eight ounces when baked. Only
exceptions to this are the manufact-
ure of cookies, doughnuts and cup
cakes. To conserve labor and mater-
ial cakes and pastry may not • he
packed in portions weighing less than
eight ounces. The regulation which
requires cash or ticket payment for
bakery products is similar to that,
introduced by the Provincial Milk
Control Board for milk distribution.
BOY SAVES THREE MEN
A teen -aged boy saved the lives of
his father, grandfather and another
man on Sunday when he swam half a
mile to get help after their small
hag overturned in Lake •Huron neat
Turnbull's Grove, north of Grand
Bend, The bey was Dick Hanna, of
Detroit. Those rescued were his fa-,
ther, Wilbur Hanna, and his 76 -yr:•
eld grandfather, both of Detroit,and.
M. E, McCallum of Grand Bend. The
three erten and the youth were out in
the lake in the boat when it sudden-
ly overturned. They were able to
hang, -on to the overturned boat but
not able to attract he attention of
anyone on shore half a mile away,
Thu lad suggested that the three men
try and hang on to the bot while he
twixn to chore, which he did and
Norman Jackson secured a boat and
rescued the men, later Dr. 14. H.
Cowen took his motor boat from
Grand Bend and went out and towed
in the eveeturnod l,oat. It was in-
deed a heroic effort on the part of
Dick Fianna, and will not ` fv o+ .

UNDE* SELECTIVE SERVICE
By Order in Council in June last,
tee ere were ;brought under ,Select -
lye 'Service. Now a teacher must con-
tinue at the teaching profession dur-
ing the scheel yeb,r, and can only
leave to take other full-time employ-
ment, except in the agricultural in-
dustry, under permit. It is not the
intention to authorize teachers to
leave the profession. 'Teachers may
;still join the armed forces without
permit, or they may .engage at part
time employment during the school
year, so long as it does not interfere
with their teaching hours.

Grand Bend, has returned home.

covering.

Quite a few acres of fall wheat
lies already been sown in this district
and we hope that its returns will not
be in vain, or- a job lot as it was
this year. •

tail end of the summer holidays and
for those that were on tip -toes to
enjoy all its amusements --Will for

of synthetic rubber imported from
the 1LS,A., will be released for •sale

of synthetic tires has already ibegun

relaxed, and that the synthetic tires.
will be available only to essential us-
