Groundhog Has

WHAT DOING 891ONG
IMlVMeRSION FOOT
Successful methods of prevent-
ing and treating a serious war
ailment of shipwreck victims, im-
meersiou foot, have been developed
by•three Royal Canadian naval
medical officers, the War Infor-
mation Board of Canada an-
nounces.
Of 150 survivors of torpedoed
vessels they treated at an East-
ern Canadian port, only seven re-
quired amputation of the affected
foot. By contrast, nearly all sur-
vivors picked up by trawlers front
one internationally k,town Ship
which was sunk in European wa-
ters had to have their feet am-
putated.
Caused by Exposure
Immersion foot its caused usu-
ally by exposure in life rafts or
boats for long periods and if net
properly treated is likely to re-
sult in gangrene, requiring ampu-
tation to save the victim's life.
The rules for prevention of the
condition are: 1. Coves legs and
feet with a thick coating of grease
as long-distance swimmers do; 2.
Remove any constricting clothing
such as tight boots hioh are in
use for warmth if the feet are in
water anyway; 3. Exercise tihe
feet as much as possible, to keep
the blood circulating, as long as
they are healthy.
The great tragedy of many im-
mersion foot victims is that res-
cuers in giviug treatment to sur-
vivors of ship sinkings usually
give the wrong treatment which
causes the patient intense suffer-
ing and even loss of one or both
feet. Rubbing the feet and apply-
ing hot water bottles and blan-
kets is exactly the wrong treat-
ntee t.
.First Aid Rules
First aid rules for this condi-
tion are: 1. Keep the patient dry
and waren except for his feat; 2.
Lightly dust sulfanilamide powder
on any wounds', culn or sores; 8.
Wrap the leg's in some soft clean
material and elevate on pillows;
4. Leave further treatment for a
doctor who should be seen as soon
as possible. No washing, soaking,
antiseptics, lotions or, ointments,
except the sulfanilamide powder,
should be used. The patient must
rot stand or walk, and his feet
and lege must be handled gently.
Survivors treated in the port
had their feet wrapped in sterile
towls to keep them dory, and pack-
ed in ice, or kept under a blast of
000l air frotn a fan, because the
success of the treatment of im-
mersion foot depends on bringing
the affected parts back to normal
temperature very slowly, over n
period of weeks.

milk casein. It is waren, soft,
resilient and will drape well. It
can be added to rayon and cotton
to improve their adaptability.
Most of the important uses of the
new fibre made frant milk are be-
ing e)nplyoed in women's dress
fabrics, shirtings, sweaters end

Q. How can I clean steel
knives?
A. To clean the steel blades
rub them vigorously with ashes
dampened with water.
Q. How can I improve the flavor
of lemon pie?
A. Place the rind into the fill-

it will not have that bitted taste
that grated lemon rind often pro-
duces.
Q. How can I keep the floor
mop clean':
A. Instead of trying to shake
bhe dirt out of a new floor plop
after starting to use it, brush it
with a whisk broom. The mop will
always be fluffy and clean.
Q. How can T easily remove ink
spots from the fingers?
A. Rub the inside of . a "•banana
peeling over the fingers.

an inner covering of oilcloth, and
an outer covering of sorea attrac-
tive washable material. Then
there will be no worry about bhem
on a we day, as the rain will not
injure them-

A Strength From
Beyond Our Limits
(An Editorial In The Chi.-
tlan Science Ment or)
For 'litfndreetls of years the great''
military and uavel leaders of the
Englislt-apeaMug race have been
devout mien, with a subiltne faith
IR God and a fire) belief in ttte
ultimate triumph of right as the
fulfilment of His will, It came as.
no great surprise, then, when Gen.
Anderson ordered a spec-
ial serviee of thankegiviag to he
held Sunday, May 23, i'or his vie.
torious British First Army to Tun-
isia, explaiuin•g:
"When success conies our way,
we are inclined to place too much
emphasis on our own skill and
power and not enough on the
strength which comes from beyond
human limits."
Those are words which night
have been uttered by that fighting
man of God, Gen. Sir Bernard Law
.Montgomery of the British 1+7ighth
Army, or by that other Covenant-
er, Gen, Thomas Jonathan Jack-
son,
ackson, C.S.A., who lived according
to the New Testament and fought
according to the Old,
Nelson knelt on the deck of the
Yietory on the eve of Trafalgar,
and Farragut committed his course
to. God as he sailed into Mobile
Bay. `Washington and Lee bum)*
' asked for divine guidance on ev-
ery occasion. "Stonewall" Jackson
ordered thanksgiving services aft-
er victory and never failed to give
God the credit for his successes.
On one of his last days he recom-
mended the Bible as a model for
generals' official reports, and cit -
ed
ited the narrative of Joshua's battle
with the Amalekitest "It has clear-
ness, brevity, fairness, modesty;
and it traces the victory to its
right source, the blessing of God."
That this remarkable quality of
true humility is common to many
great military zuen Is emphasized
by. General Anderson's action.
