RED CROSS NEWS
Of all the gifts of tbeer and, .eloth-
big sent by the Canaftn Red Cross
to Britain, it is probable that the
262,000 pounds of jam sent by the
women of Ontario in 1942 did most
to raise the spirits, and morale of the
children over there. There se not
much place in the war -time economy
of Britain for each luxuries as sweets
or candies, and tin the hearts of the
younger generation over there, the
'void left by the shortage of checolat-
ec and 4.day-suckers has been am-
i ply filled by that old stand-by, bread
and jam. Bread from Canadian wheat
and jam preserved and packed by the
women of Ontario. Of the 262,000
pounds. of jam, jelly and honey pre-
pared for shipment in 1942, only one
half of one percent had to be discar-
ded, The remainder was donated to
Orphanages, Hospitals for ,Children,
Norsery Schools, and civilian victims
of the bombings. Hundreds of letters
from all parts of Britain tell how
much this extra, sweet is needed and
appreciated,
