.Holiday fatalities in the United
States mounted to 361 over the past
Christmas week -end, but the toll
from accidents was below that of last
year when 431 persons died. Lighter
traffic on the highways due to tire
and gas rationing contributed to the
fact that 219 were killed iii motor
accidents this year compared to' 334
traffic victims in: 1941:
ADEQUATE BUTTER SUPPLY
Ottawa — Assurance that Domin-
ion wide butter supplies to meet,the
new ration of a half -pound a person
weekly will be quickly available and
a request that the public co-operate
in observing the rationing regulation

enough butter to meet the ratron is
made available in areas where short-
ages have been reported.

of liquor during war -time and asked
the co-operation of the ;Provineial
Governments by the reduction of
hours of sale. Pointing out that the
use of alchol beverages in Canada
had increased greatly since the out-
break of war—spirits .371/2 %, wine
25 p.c. and beer more than 60 p.c.—
he urged the practice of temperance
in the use of such beverages and
showed how in various ways exces-
sive indulgence is a hindrance to the
national war effort.

' 'Late Mary Haugh
Mrs. Thomas Johnston, formerly
Mary Haugh, died suddenly at her
:home, •west of Blake, in Hay Town-
sbipi Dec. 26th, Mrs.
Othnston had sat down to 'a Christ-
mas dinner which she enjoyed with
members of the family and the next
morning was found dead in bed. She
had reached the .age of 86 years, 9.
