And how quickly these summer months will fly... We are filling orders as fast as we can get in the coal... SO be wise; put in your order early and have your coal bin filled when winter comes along. The Coal Administrator also urges that where - ever possible people should use Western Canadian coal and thus conserving exchange and saving. labour. The chief mines in. Alberta. produced some 2,137,000 tons ,of do;nestis coal in 1.9440 giving ern- pl`oyment to 1,966 miners for 95 days only in the six summer months and to 3,313 ruiners for 107 days in the winter months. Let us fill your order for either Alberta, or most any size of hard Anthracite coal, NOW!.... STADE & WEIDO 2URiCH - ONT. QUALITY ,». PRICE • SERVICE Will Entertain . The annual 'School Entertainment of S. S. No. 12, Hay, 14th evneession school will be held next Monday af- ternoon at 2 p.m. The school will have as their guests the scholar' and teacher of S. S. No. -4, Hay, Bronson line school. Suitable programs are being prepared to make this a very interesting meeting. The public are cordially invited to attend. TO USE THE MAILS The war surely brings about some revolutionary turns in the business and 'social world. The Bell Teleph- one Company of Canada is asking the public to send their Christmas greetings by nail -this year, instead of by long distance telephone — and to do it early out of consideration for the post office workers. The com- pany has doubtless spent many tho- usands of dollars in building up the "Christmas Greetings by Telephone" habit, but apparently it is concerned lest vital war business may be delay- ed—for, as it points out, "the war must go on, even at Christmas time" It's the sort of request that many thoughful people will heed. And of course the Government can make good use of the extra revenue that increase in postal traffic -will bring. It was France's pride, consisting of a- bout 60 warships, and the estimated value of the fleet was around $28.6,000,00, which is a lot of money but sooner than let it go into bhe enemy's hands it was sunk, in anost cases the captains of the ships going down with it, also many sailors went down with their blown up snips. BULLET HITS LIGHT Over the week -end and during the early part of this week real winter weather has set in, and the shivering cold season is with us again for a few months. Heavy snowstorms see- med to centre in this district, hit 'Western Ontario over the week -end blocking some country roasts and sideroads as well as highways. The snowplows were busy and still there is plenty to do as the storms are continuing. Traffic accidents caus- ed by the storms are being reported in many districts. Visibility on the highways was so bad tat drivers of two cars on No. 81 highway, near Mount Carmel Church, driving along slowly with headlights on, did not see each other and .the cars swiped each other's sides. HAD SOCIAL GATHERING A very pleasant evening was spent at the home of •11Ir and Mrs. Louis Durand, north of Drysdale, on Sat- urday evening, the eve of the depart- ure of their son Orland who was be- ing transferred to Halifax as he has enlisted in the Navy. All the fanc- ily were home including Mrs. C, Rau. and little Helen; Mr and Mrs. R. Sreenan; Mr and :Mrs, Gus. Roche, Margaret and friend and Maxime of London; Philip of Windsor; Mr and Mrs 11 Gelinas and Mts. Maurice Durand. The evening was fittingly spent in music and singing and on Sunday the family had their Christ- mas dinner before Orland lett to go back to duty. Orland was the reci- pient of many lovely gifts from all the family, including a bautiful hand knit sweater he received from the Zurich Red Cross which he appreci- ated very much and thankful for the same, A bullet of 38 calibre pierced bhe west window of Sheriff's Hill office in the southwest corner of the Court House, ,Goderich. It entered at a hei- ght of seven feet, broke the electric lighe ibulb, pierced the shade, struck the plaster wall near the• door and entered the side door frame at a height of eight feet. The discovery was made when Caretaker 'George Tames unlocked the office door to clean up. Prac- tically all types of imported nuts are either very scarce or entirely missing from store counters, while retailers who handle candies have been exper- iencing severe shortages in the nor- mal trade of recent months and .ex- pect the situation to become even more acute nearer the holiday sea- son. 'Several monufacturers who pre viously provided the old-fashioned va rieties of hard candy, popular at the Christmas season, now are using their sugar quota for chocolate bars. WAS NEARLY 97.
