The prospects are for a good crop,

some cord for this enterprize and
these are very busy gathering in the
crop, which consists of the cobs only
SUCCESSFUL DRIVE
The Red ,Cross drive for salvage

response was very successful by the

tons of old rubber, consisting of tires

Toronto. "Bill" Siebert, our local
postmaster, had charge of the cam-
paign and the mail carriers co-oper
ated and made the event a big sue -

NOT FORCED TO BUY
War Savings Stamps
When the temperature reaches 80
or 85 in Canada, it 'is considered
heat, but in Africa it registers ;100
and 110, and still the British, Can-
adian, American an.cl other allies
fght on day after day for us and all
we live for. In Canada the temper-
ature went up to 85, and that may
be why there was a noticeable de
cline .in the purchase of War Savings
certificates and stamips. But whatev-
er the cause of the decline, the need
is great and any sacrifices this co-
untry has made thus far are insigni-
ficant when compared with what our
men and women at the front are
enduring. The deduction from cream
cheques have not reached the propor •
tions they cloubtess will. In the
rnentime, it shiould be understood
there is no compulsion about the de-
ductions. Farmers are at liberty to
refuse or accept. War Savings ,sta.-
naps as part payment, but if they can
arrange to accept only one or two
a week the total across Canada wo-
uld be tremendous. Shoppers are as
ked to take War Stamps from their
merchants whenever possible. Every
stamp bought will help and they
bear interest.
FERTILITY MEETING HELD AT.
CREDITON
The .value of a proper fertility
program was appaent when farmers
gathered to inspect the hybrid corn
plots on the farm of Frank Cochlin,
Crediton, on Sept. 9th. - pronoun-
ced increase in both tonage of green
,,talks, ears, and earlier maturity on
the fertilized plots as compared to
the check was discussed by .Prof. H
G. Bell, OAC, Guelph. He stated that
the bountiful crops this yea were not
l
only due to satisfactiry weathtr but
also to the increased use of commer
cial fertilizers to supplement the
barnyard manure and clovers plough
ed down. The [Cochilin hybrid corn
provide an excellent demonstration
o proper fertilizing, care and mana-
gement. Altogether 25 acres of nor-
thern grown hybrid seed corn is be-
ing produced of varieties recomm•
ended by the Eidgetown Exp. Fern.
The Reeve of •Stehepn, Alonlo Mc
Cann, welcomed the f#timers to the
h est fig and pointed out the super-
ior merits of hybrid corn for either
ensilige or husking purposes; stress-
ing laser injury by the corn borer,
greater root development and inter
used yields. David Hunter of the Ag-
ricultural Suplies 33oard, Ottawa,
urged farmers to keep on producing
those lines of farming that they we-
re faaniiar with such as iba:con, milk
beef, eggs and grain. He cautioned
against swinging too far into the new
crops like soybeans, flax and sun-
flowers. The :meting was arranged
by J. C. Shearer, Agric. Repesentat
rive, who outlined the difreent fer
tsiity demonstrations tarried out on
district farms on corn, 'field peas,
ho•y, ta.latttra and beim,
