To his surprise found a little note imide the box where the former had written a few lines of cheer; this Austin ap- pr1ciated very much and replied with an 8 page letter stating the Canad- ian boxes were the best, also how he enjoyed reading the Zurich Herald„ of which one had been sent in every box. PROFIT FROM FERTILIZER Very few wheat growers in Hu ion County ;attempt to grow win -:.et wheat without fertilizers any more, but it is well to draw to their a t tention that the use of fertilizers on wheat is {based ono the pr•ofitablt'nesc of the practice, provided the land is well papared and that good soil has been used. This was borne out in the test just completed on the farm of Wilfred Shortroed, Walton. The soil on which the wheat was grown is London loam, which is :brown loam over greyish mottled Stony roam an c1 clay. It is alkaline in reaction, low in nitrogen and very low. he phosphor- ic acid and potash, but has a me- dium suppl of calciurrt In the spring Mr. Shortireed reported that the crops had come through the winter exceptionally well, with no winter killing. At that time he could see no diferende in the pots but at her• vest time when the wheat was cut; the 2-121-0: yielded 33.8 buhels per acre while the unfertilized yielded 29.2. Hence there was a clear gain of 4.6 ,bushels •per acre from ;fertil- znig. 2421-0 was quoted ;at 887 cash ani. 'Mr. Shgrtrced applied ,fer- tilize',. at :hptoaiuiateiy 200 lbs, per acre which would represent an in vestment of $3.770 .with wheat at $1.00 per bucheli there was still ro- om for a nice interest on the :Money nvested. It should be noted that he plots where the wheat was grown hectre in an especilly rich section of he farm, hence the ;differencce be - ween the fertilized and tinfitilizeed vvas much less than would be looked 1 for 0 ;the average .field. The swip- e of wheat wog good and both fel- i,l%zed and ' unfdrtilized wheat i laroxia i teir' OO;lbs, to the bushel. Thursdia, September 3rd, 1942 OUR FAMILY went through hard tunes once. It taught us that you can't keep your independence without foresig.ilt and sacrifice. We learned what we could do without when we had to. So we know that a real nest -egg means more than just compulsory savings. It means all the War Savings Stamps and Cer- tificates we can lay our hands on. They're safe. And they're an invest- ment every Canadian should nz ache. Why? Because they help equip our fighting men to protect everything we've got. And because, too, they pay back $5.00 for every $4.00 we put aside now. We've got to win this war no matter what it costs — and we've got to prepare against the time when the boys come home.
