HORSE WEIGHS A TON
In this country of fine horses one
often hears of large ones, but Alex
Dixon. of Donnybrook ,had a large
black four-year-old French Horse that
weighed .close to a ton that causeda
lot of comment. The horse' was
sold last week to a man near Zurich

MOST SHIPS CROSS
I•Ialifax — Ninety-nine' per cent of
the ships leaving North America
shores for Britain are getting tlxroug'h
safely, Navy M'in'ister MacDonald
told members of a Halifax service
club, saying that only one per cent
of the merchant vessels travelling in
convioy across the Atlantic have
been lost.
SHOW BIG DROP .
First really noticeable effect of
Canada's gasoline rationing was seen
on district roads over the week -end
despite perfect Easter weather, both
local and trough traffic was recidedly
less than in previous years and con-
siderably lighter than it would have
been in the old days when the mot-
orist could pull into his service sta-
tion and say "fill her up." But that to say that no one was travel-
ing.. Far from it, there were a lot of
cars on the roads, probably agr eat
deal more than a year from now,
who knows?
COUPONS?
Ottawa — Plans are being 'made
for introduction of coupon rationing
in Canada with the probability that
sugar will be the first commodity so
rationed, Donald Gordon, chairman
of the Wartime Prices and Trade
Board said. A canvass of household-
ers will be necesary before coupon
rationing :goes into effect, to pro-
vide a registration' of consumers for
is.uance• of the coupons. Further de-
tails of the proposed coupon system
and the canvass will be announced
shortly. Ile said the method of
rationing sugar without coupon—in-
troduced last January has be•en a
great success and that there has al-
ready been a gratifying reduction in
consumption of tea and coffee, bro-
ught under the honor system- of rat -
t ioning May 26.
TIRES LAST LONGER
- By operating a car or truck at 25
e tniles per hour instead of 70 miles
- per hr., the wear on the tires can be
- cut in half. At a speed of only 40
- miles per hr., mire wear is 25 to 35
p.c. more than at 25 miles, says W.
Kalbfleisch, Agricultural Engineer
Section, Central Experimental Farm
a1 Ottawa. Not only does a lower speed
reduce the surface wear on tires, but
it also reduces tire breakage, accid-
ents, gasoline consumption and wear
on other parts of the machine.. By
driving at a moderately low speed,
one is not ego likely to ruin a tare
which goes fiat or blows out when
the car is in operation. The heavy use
brakes; quick acceleration and the
fast turning. of corners, which is as-
osciated wiith High speed driving,
wastes gasoline or :rubber.

honor of their niece Mrs. Gordon
Prance formerly (Doreen Hay) who

bingo. Miss Alpha Meyers in a few
well chosen words presented a bask-
et ful of gifts, which were very nice •
and useful. Doreen replied with
