Stephen wants study on
effects of nuclear plant
Stephen township council is
circulating a petition to all
municipalities in Huron County
asking the Royal Commission
on Electric Power Planning to
do a• study on the effects of a
nuclear power plant in the county.
The resolution says Stephen
is opposed to the construction of
generating stations in Huron
until some of the questions are
answered. The questions are
as follows:
How much land can we expect
to lose for power corridors and
transformer stations as well as
road widening and new, high-
way,?
What can normally be expected
in industrial expansion and
residential development as a
spin-off of a power plant?
What can we expect the social
cost to be to our local committees
as schools, police, jails. rec-
reation facilities, sewers and
treatment plants (lagoons)?
What is the effect of power
plant related pollution on food
plants such as beans. tomatoes,
potatoes. lettuce, alfalfa. tabacco,
onions, etc.?
What will be the effect on farm
labour cost and hence food cost?
What is the effect on human
health, animal health and plants
under the influence of the clectro-
magnetic fields of high tension
power lines?
What is the cost to the livestock
producer as a result. of urban
expansion crowding intense
livestock operations?
What is the effect of possible
marketing problems for food
grown near a nuclear plant
'because of fear of . radio active
Contamination Of food?
The total effect of power plants
in Southern Ontario on our
agricultural base?
A comparison study of the
effects of a power plant in Huron
versus some more Northern
area with limited foodland?
How much more food will be

Hutch more can we produce?
in the case of a nuclear plant
we must know what an accidental
leak of radio -active materials
in the air would do, as the pre-
valing winds are inland?
What would happen in case of
an accidental leak of radio-
active material into the water
with respect to the water intake
of the London pipeline and the
effect on the unborn?

The resolution also suggests
that establishment of a gener-
ating station in Huron would
produce pollution that would
lower yields in allcrops to varying
degrees of up to 50 percent for
white beans and also corn,
alfalfa, onions lettuce,. etc.
It continued to say that a loss
of gross yield of Huron County
crops of from one to three per
cent will mean a loss to the
economy of from one to three
million dollars per year.
