one needed assistance.
Michael Harrison, R.R. 1,
Union, had pleaded not guilty to
the charge before Judge Glenn
Hays, but the plea was later
changed to guilty after the testi-

The victim was Doug Fairbairn,
Exeter, who happened on the
scene of the crash with a friend,
Ron Essery. When Fairbairn
asked if anyone was hurt, Harri-
son hit him and then kicked him
in the head. Fairbairn sustained
a fractured cheek bone.
Harrison told the court he re-
membered nothing of the inci-
dent. He was injured in the acci-
dent.
Judge Hays levied a fine of
$400 or 40 days in jail and gave
the accused 15 days in which to
pay.
A Huron Park man, James
Foster, was fended a total of $103
on each of two charges he faced
for careless driving. They were
laid on consecutive days, July 12
and July 13. He was involved in
an accident on both occasions.
Brian Coghlin, R.R. 1, Atwood,
was fined $200 or 20 days on a
charge of dangerous driving on
November 26 and in addition he
was prohibited from driving a
motor vehicle for nine months.
He was also fined $53 for having
liquor in a place other than his
residence.
The youth had been charged
after a police chase in Huron
Park. His erractic driving had at-
tracted the attention of police.
During the ensuing chase, he
went through 15 stop signs and
tore up 250 feet of lawn at the
Centralia College of Agricultural
Technology, where he is a stu-
dent. He finally ran into a con-
crete wall and his car was demol-
ished and he and two passengers
were injured.

Hays and Justice of the Peace

fines were levied:
David Holden, Goderich, $33
for a speed of 65 in a 50 zone; Wil-

Tuckersmith
closes road
at Vanastra
Tuckersmith township council
Tuesday night authorized the
closure of the 5th Avenue ent-
rance at Vanastra to Highway 4.
The entrance constructed by
the developer of Vanastra comp-
lex over two years ago is loc-
ated on the highway just below
the crest of the hill and a fifth
of a mile north of the Vanastra
road intersection with the high-
way where there are collector
and turnoff lanes.
The 5th Avenue entrance was
called a "hazardous location
where four accidents have occur-
red this year," by Ontario Prov-
incial Police Corporal Ray Prim -
eau who attended the council
session with Constable John
Wray. Both are from the Goder-
ich detachment.
Corporal Primec!I termed the
Vanastra road intersection "an
ideal situation for turning off the
highway."
Ministry of Transportation
and Communications officials
J.B. Morris and MP Laurin were
also in attendance to discuss
closure of the entranceway
prompted by a request from
Tuckersmith for a turning lane
and lighting.
Mr. Laurin said the only way
to solve the problem is close
the entranceway as the Ministry
will not spend money on it
when there is a satisfactory
turning road a fifth of a mile
away.
With the entranceway located
near the crest of the hill no
amount of money would make it
a safe place to turn.
Reeve Elgin Thompson expres-
sed deep concern that closing
the entranceway would be a
problem for growth in Vanastra.
He said he was worried that
increased traffic to one road from
the homes and truck traffic from
the business section would prove
a hazard to children.
Mr. Morris said the turning
land at the western entrance
way to Harpur Hey off Highway
8 would be constructed in the
spring. Mr. Laurin said he would
attempt to have the Ministry
install a streetlight at the east-
ern entrance to Harpur Hey as
agreed on last year, but recently
rejected by the province because
of the lack of funds.
In other business council ren-
ewed its contract with Bud
Chamney Bros. for garbage
removal at Vanastra. An increas-
ed rate of $118 per week for
