While a bench clearing episode is not one whichwe like to
see happen in a hockey game, Friday night's incident at
the Exeterarena may have answered some of the problems
besetting the junior Hawks in recent weeks.
The entire team came to the aid of Phil Knight when he
was chased by a Belmont player looking for trouble.
Coach Terry Bourne told us Monday "individually we have
some of the best players in the league but we can't just seem
to get rolling as a team."
Bourne added that the players acted like a team when
they came to the aid of Knight, "maybe that's what we
needed to put it all together.''
Although not a spectator at Friday's game, several persons
including coach Terry Bourne said they definitely heard
Belmont coach Harold Capson tell one of his players to
"get out there and get that guy."
The guy referred to was Phil Knight. Earlier in the second
period, Knight ran into the Belmont goalie when he
wandered outside the crease for a loose puck and hit him
rather hard.
Whenever the subject of violence in hockey comes up
someone almost always mentions that the big trouble is in
the NHL and at the amateur level everything is under
control.
This may be true in most cases, but it's instances like in
Exeter Friday night and at the London Gardens a few weeks
ago that spoil our national sport.
Ron Bogart, coach of the Exeter bantams tells us of a
similar incident in Ilderton Sunday afternoon when his club
defeated Saltfleet in the first round of the annual Ilderton
Lions tourney.
After losing to Exeter, the Saltfleet club was ready to take
to fisticuffs and Bogart quickly sent his team to the dressing
rooms to avoid any trouble.
Both the CAHA and OHA have stiffened the penalties
this year for fighting and unnecessary roughness but it' still
seems to continue.
Inidentally, the bantams, undefeated in regular Shamrock
league play, will be back in Ilderton Sunday at noon as they
meet Byron in the Ilderton tournament semi-final. A victory
will put them into the championship round later the same
afternoon.
STILL SUCCESSFUL
Enjoyed a short chat with Jack Nairn during an inter-
mission at Sunday night's Ontario Hockey Association
Continental Senior "A" game in Ilderton.
Nairn, who left the Jets as their playing coach at the end of
last season, has transferred his winning touch to another
club.
The affable mink rancher from the St. Marys area is now
coach of the Stratford Cullaton Junior "B" team. The
Cullatons have to date this season won 15 games and
suffered only three losses.
One could say that Nairn and Stratford have met their
Waterloo. All three losses have been at the hands of the
Waterloo Siskins. -
A few rumours have been flying around Stratford that
Nairn may return to the playing ranks with the Stratford
Perths.
Nairn told us Sunday night that these rumours were
entirely false. He added, "I hung up my skates as a winner
and that's the way I, would like to keep it."
Jack, as a player and coach was very instrumental in the
great successes enjoyed by the Jets over the past five years
or so. They won the title last year and put up a good showing
against the Barrie Flyers in the Ontario senior final.
The 1975-76 Jets look as if they could have a good chance
at retaining the championship won a year ago.
They looked like an effective, well balanced club in defeat-
ing their old rivals the league leading Durham Huskies,
Sunday night.
Sonny Pennington and Lorne Daer give the Jets/as solid a
goal tending duo as any team in the league. The new playing
coach Steve DeGurse has taken over where Nairn left off
by leading the team in scoring. Before Sunday's contest,
DeGurse was the top man with 16 points. He was followed
closely by Randy Roth with 15 points, Rick Fifield with 13 and
the veteran Don Carter with 11 points.
The first two goals by the Jets Sunday night came on
beautiful shots by Randy Roth and Rick Fifield. Both drives
rose ; quickly and caught the corner of the net just over
Durham goalie Gord Becker's shoulder. It takes pinpoint
shots to beat the veteran Becker like the two first goals did
Sunday.
While the Jets appear to be back in winning form, one
fellow continues to do enough worrying for the entire team.
That's no other than club manager Don Urbshott.
Urbshott who is known as the Silver Fox since his retire-
ment two years ago watches the home games from a corner
of the rink and by looking at his expressions Sunday night
one would never know his team was winning. Keep smiling,
Red.
colonials, Flyers in draw
The Shipka Colonials and
Zurich Flyers battled to a 4-4 tie
in South Huron Intermediate
hockey play at the Zurich arena
Sunday afternoon.
The game was close from start
to finish with never more than
one goal separating the two clubs.
The contest was only 22
seconds old when Derek 0 Brien
put the Flyers on the scoreboard
on a three-way combination
with Ron Corriveau and Ron
rader.
At 3.40 Dan Dalton had the
Colonials back on even terms with
a successful shot on a play
originated by Stan Lovie and
Larry Laye.
Only 20 seconds later, the
Zurich club was back in the
lead as Ron Rader converted
passes from Ron Corrveau and
Derek Obtien.
The only goal of the second
period came at the three minute
mark when Larry Laye put the
Colonials ahead for the first and
only time on a three-way effort
with Stan Lovie and Dan Dalton.
By 7.40 of the third period,
the Flyers had scored twice, to
regain a one goal margin. Ron
Rader registered from Derek
O'Brien and Paul Corriveau
blinked the red light on passes
from Ron Desjardine and Glen
Overholt.
An apparent win for the Flyers
was plucked away with_ only 10
seconds left in the game on a
successful shot for the Colonials
by Dan Dalton. Assisting were
Jim Guenther and Larry Laye.
The Colonials took nine of 17
penalties called by referees Pat
Obrien and Harry Moir.
Kevin McKinnon of the Flyers
was named the first star followed
by Tom Anderson of Shipka and
Derek O'Brien of Zurich.

Zurich opened the scoring at
1:19 of the first period when
Ron Corriveau scored on passes
from Ron Rader and Derek

the season. The assist was cred-

McKinnon then scored at 14.05
with assists going to Bob Mern-
er and Ken Smale. Before the
period ended Zurich made it
4-0 as Ken Smale converted
on passes from Bob Merner and

Huron Park got its first goal of
the game at 1.06 of the second
period when John Thomas tip-
ped in a pass from Rick Funston.
The Flyers scored two quick
goals to give them a 6-1 lead
after two periods. The first
came at 9.43 as Glen Overholt
fired in a shot from Ron Desj-
ardine, then again at 10.03
as Ron Desjardine scored on
passes from Pat Bedard and Bob
Farquhar.
The third period was again
all Zurich as they opened the
period with a goal at .20
seconds as Ken Smale passed
to Kevin McKinnon to score
his second of the game. The Fly-
ers scored again at 6.21 as Dick
Bedard got his second of the
on an unassisted effort. Zurich
made it 9-1 at 12.20 as Ron
Desjardine scored on a pass from
Pat Bedard. Huron Park scored
their second goal of the game at
the 18 minute mark when Rick
Fienston tipped in a shot from
Bob Pinter. The Flyers scored
their final goal of the game
at 19.05 on a beautiful passing
play by Ron Rader and Richard
Schilbe. Schilbe finished off the
play as Rader fed him the puck
perfectly.
Zurich picked up three minors
and two majors while Huron Park
picked up six minors and a
misconduct handed out by ref-
erees Pat O'Brien and John
McNeilly,
First star of the game was
again Kevin McKinnon; second
star was Pete Wuerth of Huron
Park and the third star was Rick
Funston also of Huron Park.
