HomeMy WebLinkAboutZurich Citizens News, 1975-11-26, Page 16Page 16 -Zurich Citizens News, November 26, 1975 Sports Spotlight By Ross Haugh In the switch over to the News we have neglected to congratulate several people and organizations on excellent performances and records during the summer and fall months. First of all, the Crediton Minor Baseball Association deserves at least three cheers from area residents for not only providing activities for about 75 boys during the 1975 summer. While giving area youngsters a chance to play ball, the Crediton teams went a little farther than that. With four teams participating three advanced well into Ontario Baseball Association playoffs with one club reaching the final round and two others being eliminated in the semi-finals. We are sure you won't find many small villages in this province with populations of about 400 with three teams battling for provincial championships. The wrap-up party a week ago for the' Crediton teams was a very enjoyable affair with most of the parents of the boys in attendance. In this year of recognition for women, we must hastily add that the Crediton girls ball team was also honoured. Again we would like to pass on our heartiest congratula- tions to everyone connected with the Crediton minor ball operation. It's people like Fred Bowers, Wilmar Wein, Russell and Audrey Clarke, Don Finkbeiner, Bob Osgood Jr., and Sr., Lorne and Joyce Preszcator, Gerry Parsons and Eleanor Roeszler that make it all possible. GREAT GRID YEAR While on the subject of congrtulations we can't go by the football teams at South Huron District High School. Coaches Doug Ellison and Dave Cox brought the Huron - Perth Conference championship to the local school for the fifth time in se ven tries. The club has missed the league final only once in the past eight years. Doug Ellison has indicated he would like to retire from the coaching scene, at least temporarily. In addition to his regular duties at the school, Ellison is currently secretary of the Western Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Associa tion, a member of the Exeter sports complex committee and coach of the school's wrestling teams. It seems he has plenty of reason to take a year or two away from the football scene. In his announcement to retire for a bit, he did say he would continue if no one else could be found to fill the vacancy. The other team at South Huron, the seniors also bad a very successful year and they carne within a few points of bringing home the H -P title. For many years, coaches Ron Bogart and Glenn Mickle have been handling the senior club. Bogart was also thinking of retiring after 12 years of service but after the loss in the final to Clinton commented, "I can't retire a loser." Actually the senior accomplishment of making the finals was noteworthy. The team started the year with only about ten holdover players from the year before and the coaches were forced to work in a lot of newcomers. ' In the senior final in Stratford a few weeks ago, the Pan- thers in losing 17-12 held an edge in every department except on the scoreboard. The feature of this game despite the loss was the performance of Dashwood youngster Doug Mclsaac who gained 182 yards in 23 carries. This amounts to almost eight yards per carry. But the amazing factor is that Mclsaac gained 69 yards more along the ground than the entire Clinton club. Congratulations again to both teams for great perfor- mances and to the girl cheerleaders in also winning the Huron -Perth championship. The pretty girls and the enthusiasm they create with their well organized cheers are also very important to a team's success. SET RUSSIAN DATES Dates have been established for the two touring Russian hockey teams who will play a total of eight exhibition games against NHL clubs during a North American tour in late December and January. -The Soviet Army team will open the series against the New York Rangers in Madison Square Gardens on December 28. The second stop for the army team will be in Montreal New Year's Eve when they take on the Canadiens Their next two games are January 8 in Boston against the Bruins and January 11 against the Flyers in Philadelphia. The other touring Russian club, the Wings of the Soviet will be in Pittsburgh December 29, in Buffalo January 4, in Chicago January 7 and will wind up with a January 10 game against the Islanders. DIDN'T WAIT LONG When the Buffalo' Sabres lost the final Stanley Cup game by a score of 2-0 on May 27 of this year, general manager Punch Imlach said "Wait until next year." Punch must have known what he was talking about or able to instill the same confidence in the Sabres as they arc off to a flying start, probably one of the best of any team in National Hockey league history. Hawks lose to Hawks The Exeter Hawks lost their second game of the new Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D" season Friday night. The Hawks were on the short end of a 4-1 score to the Mitchell Hawks. The game was played at the Exeter arena. The only action slated for the Hawks this weekend is Friday night when they will host the defending Ontario champion Belmont Green Giants. In Friday's loss to Mitchell, the only goal for the Hawks came near the midway mark of the Phil Knight with the assist being provided by Ken Pinder, Dennis Fischer scored the first of three goals for Mitchell in the first period and the goal by Knight knotted the score, but only for a short time. Only 39 seconds later, Fischer scored again to put the visiting Hawks in front to stay. Late in the middle period Randy Raycraft put Mitchell two goals ahead and in the third period Dennis Fischer completed the game scoring and his hat trick per- formance. The Exeter dub took 16 of 31 penalties called by the referees. second period. It came on a successful shot by defenceman +-I-+ Wash house and car windows with up and down strokes on one side and side to side strokes on the other. If streaks are left, you can tell where to wipe.
