What can we do for them? Many things! There are many rules of courtesy to the Blind. The person who has had little experience with blind people tends to feel awkward at first. Remember that the person, though blind, is a real individ- ual like yourself. Here are a few suggestions. (1) When you meet a blind person, introduce yourself, this will relieve his embarr- assment if he does not recog- nize your voice immediately. (2) To substitute the smile which often accompanies a greeting between sighted persons, a blind person will often offer to shake hands as his means of immediate com- munication. Ready re"sponse to this gesture. will put the blind person at ease. (3) When you offer assist- ancc. speak in a normal tone. Also. address him directly -- this helps him locate you. Just :Isk "May 1 he of Hclp?" IF you are acquainted with h1111, use his name. (-t) When you !race a blind person unexpectedly, tell him rou arc going. He apprec- iate this information. It is most disconcerting for him to continue to talk to you, and later find that you have gone. Remember that we have 30.000 blind people in Can- ada. 168 of these in the counties of Huron and Perth. The CN1B needs financial support! Be kind to the can- vassers during the d rive. the first week of October. in the village of Zurich-. In Zurich the fund raising is conducted by the Lions.
