Zurich Citizens News, 1975-09-25, Page 18Would you Have you ever wondered how so many people from distant points find out about the annual Bean Festival in Zurich? Have you ever wond- ered what these people from distant points think about the annual Bean Festival in Zur- ich? Each year before and after the annual event many art- icles appear in newspapers across both Canada and United States regarding the Big Day in Zurich. One such article entitle "Would you believe --Zurich and the bean?" appeared in the Dearborn (Mich) Leader, on Thursday, August 14, and was written by one of their colum- nists, Wally Roberts; who apparently attended the event YOMNIMINNMNIMM 35th Anniversary Dance for HARVEY AND BERTHA TAYLOR Friday, Sept. 26 Dancing 10 - 2 HULLY GULLY Varna Music by THE HEYWOOD BROS. His story follows; Remember that old jump - rope chant? "Beans, beans --- the musical fruit... the more you eat the more you toot." Well, up in Zurich Ontario there holding a Bean Fest- ival on the next -to -last Satur- day in August. And it's something to go rooty-toot- toot about, believe me. The good wife and I attend- ed the festival last year and sampled the French bean soup, the German bean salad, and a healthy slab of Dutch apple pie washed down with a big mug of Brazillian coffee. The lowly bean has never been more glorified than in this Canadian cuisine carnival. Picking green beans in my garden last week touched off my memory cells. I had neglected t pick one patch of the green beans and they had suddenly developed into lumpy brown beans. You can't forget those green beans or they will grow fat and ugly good only for the bean pot. I've often wondered as you lift the plants' green skirts and rip those dangling, slim appendages how a bean plant really feels as you yank and strip it bare. How many times can a plant suffer such an indignity? WHO SETS THE plant's inner mechanism that tells it to keep trying to prod- uce beans that will go to seed and so that plant functions et- ernally? You'11 note if you're a gardener that after four or five pickings the plant gives up and dies. K d JACK RIDDELL My thanks to the voters of Huron - Middlesex for your support in the Sept. 18 election. I look forward to doing my utmost to serve ALL the people of the riding in any way possible. I intend to resume my weekly reports from the Legislature as soon as it is called into session. I also intend to begin again my Saturday morning visits to towns throughout the riding. The time and location of these visits will be advertised in advance in the local press. This should provide a convenient opportunity for people throughout the riding to meet with me and discuss any problems they have. Since the election we have tried to get all the road side "Riddell" signs taken down. I am very concerned that this job be completed quickly and thoroughly. If anyone knows of any of my campaign material that is still posted please contact one of the following numbers, and it will be taken care of immediately. You've knocked me around for the last time. See you next year in the seed catalogue." Naturally, those beans in Zurich are of a different variety. Those navy beans are harv- ested mechanically and never feel the soft pluckinig „hands of a gentleman farmer. In Zurich, they pay homage to the Navy Bean. All 800 happy souls in this small vill- age outside of Grand Bend, Ontario prepare huge pots of beans to feed the hordes that descent upon them late in August. They soak the beans over- night. Hunks of beef or cured ham are plopped in before the three-hour boil begins. To make those beans properly mealy in texture a smidgen of baking soda is added during the last hour. If you arrive in Zurich prior to the 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. serving of the beans and ham you can assuage your appet- ite with pancakes and sausage from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.. Folks in Zurich advise you to Come Early, Stay Late and Have Fun. PLENTY TO DO FOR the whole family. Tractor rides, Drucker's store, buggy rides, Horse races. Horseshoe pitch- ing contests. Dancing after a cuntry and western show. Even a beauty contest to pick a Festival Queen. Zurich is only a couple of hours away via 1-94. Cross ov- er into Canada at Port Huron and head for Grand Bend via Highway 7 and 84. When the Lake Huron breezes begin to thicken with that sweet, savory fragrance of those bubbling, boiling beans you' 11 know you 're almost there. Yep, there'll be a lot of fid- dlin, scraping and thomping at the Country and Western show. The central area of the village is blocked off and a once -a -year mall gives Zurich an old-world market atmos- phere.
