Teacher's anniversary
A great gab -fest was enjoy-
ed by five former school
chums of Stratford Normal
School. Sixty years ago, a
boarding house at 426 Ont-
ario Street, Stratford, was
the meeting place for Gladys
McDowell, of Goderich,
Olive O'Brien, of Zurich,
Grace McCordick, of Forest,
Letta Guenther, of Dashwood
and Lucy Bowers, of Wing -
ham.
This accommodation was
supposedly the best of its
kind in Stratford at this time,
as the school principal inform-
ed the girls that the owner
IV 1g p‘r
was the best cook in town.
One would wonder • if this
wasn't a very true state-
ment as the five ladies are
enjoying excellent health -
better than half i century
later.
Several area schools were
fortunate in having three of
these teachers on their staffs.
Miss Gladys McDowell ret-
ired from the Goderich
school system, Mrs. Letta
Taylor, from Stephen Central
School and Miss Olive O' -
Brien. from Zurich Public
School, after forty-two years
of service. Mrs. Lucy Streight
taught remedial reading in
the Toronto area and Mrs.
Grace Nixon went back to
teaching in Royal Oak, after
her family was raised.
These five dedicated
educators have always kept
in contact with one another
thrugh cards and letters.
Their first reunion, after
fifty three years, was held in
Stratford seven years ago.
From all reports, the din of
women's nostalgic chatter
was no less quiet this year
than then.
Mrs. George Deichert,
formerly Frieda Kalbfleisch,
was the sixth room -mate
of this group in 1915. Mrs.
Deichert passed away on
December 27, 1954.

Dog guides
"There is no truth to the
rumour that dog guides may
be obtained for a blind person
through the collection of tin
foil. match covers or tags
from lea bags,” said R.W.
Kennedy, District Administ-
rator for the Canadian Nat-
ional Institute for the Blind.
"We don't know how these
rumours get started but
periodically the iliea crops
up and only proves to be conf-
using and disappointing to
blind people and their friends.
he added. -
Mr. Kennedy said that any
blind person wanting a dog
guide may apply at any one
of a number of dog guide
training SChOOIS and his
-eligibility in the areas of
health, degree of vision and
age will be quickly establ-
ished.
No blind person who is
otherwise eligible will be
denied a dog guide for lack of
funds. Financial assistance
for training and travel to and
from the school is one of the
CNIB services supported by
public donations,
