(by Paul Morrison)
In Elmira an September 5
and 6, the Zurich Softball
Team went to the semi-fin-
als before being eliminated.
On Saturday morning the
Zurich team played Kitchener
and came up with a 1-0
victory, The only run of the
game came in the bottom of
the first inning. With one out
Paul Morrison singled, then
stole second, and easily scored
on a single by Ken Clark.
That was all Cliff Gingerich
needed as he pitched near
perfect baseball.
Cliff set down the first
11 batters before Kitchener
got their first of only two
hits. The second hit came with
two out in the seventh inning.
Wayne Clark, playing first and
Kevin McKinnon playing
third, came up with some fine
defense plays, and quickly
killed their hunting game,
and set the stage for a strong
Zurich victory.
The second game for Zurich
was on Saturday at 4:30
p.m. The Zurich team rallied
for two runs in the bottom of
the seventh to defeat Elmira
by a score of 3-2.
Zurich opened the scoring
in the first as Kevin McKinn-
on singled, stole second, went
to third on a passed ball,
and scored as the Elmira
catcher made a bad throw to
third base.
Murray Morrison, pitching
for Zurich, was in fine fashion
until the top of the sixth,
when Elmira scored two tuns
to go ahead 2-1. Elmira took
advantage of two Zurich
errors, plus a couple of hits
to score their runs.
In the bottom of the seventh
Zurich rallied for their` thrill-
' ing victory. With one out,
Kevin McKinnon singled,
then Cliff Gingerich, pitch -
hitting, was walked. Isidore
Laporte, another pitch hitter,
was safe at first on a field-
er's choice, as the short-
stop for Elmira, elected to go
to third to try and cut Kevin

down, but a hard slide by
Kevin jarred the ball loose
and he was safe at third base.
Brian Campbell then struck
out for the second out. Paul
Morrison lined the second
pitch over third base scoring
Kevin and Cliff, to win the
game 3-2.

strongly advise against using
the oven for hone cnning.
Since temperatures fluctu-
ate widely on oven thermost-
ats, the product you are proc-
essing may not reach a temp-
erature high enough to ensure
proper sterilization.
Fruits may be processed
sufficiently, but it is difficult
to determine an accurate
processing time because of
the temperature fluctuations.
Oven -canning of veget-
ables should never be at-
tempted. Since a heat great-
er than boiling is required to
destroy dangerous bacteria
which may be present in veg-
etables, the only safe way to
home can vegetables is iri a
presure canner; 00 matter at
what temperature an oven
thermostat is set, the internal
temperature of the jar of
'vegetables will never get
above boiling.
Another consideration is the
danger that jars may explode
while in the oven. The direct.
Heat from the elements may
be too great for the jars
to withstand, leaving you with
0 very messy oven, possible
damage to your stove, and a
loi al' wasted food.
