PC candidate lists priorities
(by Jim Hayter)
With the election just over
one week away, I would like
to outline my policy on sever-
al issues of concern to every-
one. First of all I would like
to point out that the preserv-
ation of agricultural land
and residential use of land
in rural areas are perfectly
compatible. In the last decade
farm production in most
commodities has reached an
all-time high, in fact over-
supply has been a problem for
many of our farmers. It seems
reasonable that in view of our
ability to stimulate high
production controlled resid-
ential use of rural lands would
be possible and even desir-
able.
Whether or not a nuclear
power station is desirable
in Huron depends on whom
you talk to. A white bean
grower is threatened by poss-
ible radiation effcts on his
beans but an urban consum-
er expressed concern about
adequate future power
resources at a reasonable
price. My plan would be to
promote a really compreh-
ensive examination of all the
effects, and have it establ-
ished what sector will gain and
who will suffer.

Detroit engineers suggest that
within the next ten years, most
of a car's weight will be of
materials that have yet to be
discovered. They are on the
lookout for strong, lightweight
compounds.
Even if you store your car for a
long time, you'll want to insure
it against fire and theft. If
you're not going to use it for a
really long time, it may be
cheaper to sell it.
Car won't start? Try your
lights - if they're out, or dim,
it's probably the battery (or
connections to it). If lights are
okay, the trouble is in the
starter.
Compression ratio is the
proportion between the
volume of the cylinder when
the piston is at the bottom of
its stroke and that volume
when the piston is at the top of
its stroke.
New Englanders in Cuttyhunk
island, Mass., just removed the
island's only stop sign. Seems
people didn't like that kind of
government interference.

moral values and encourage
gambling. 1 feel that Win-
tario is an excellent way to
raise money for our province.
All the profits are being
channelled into cultural
and recreational initiatives
which will definitely benefit
all Ontarians.
The stabilization programs
envisaged by the Ontario
government do not reward
inefficient economics on the
farm. The price paid in the
Beef -Calf Income Stabiliz-
ation Program is based on
production, therefore lower
production will bear less ret-
urn.
An economist will tell you
that wage and price controls
will halt cost -push and wage --
pull inflation in the short-
term, but like every other
external factor brought to
bear on the open market price
mechanism, some reactions
will be felt elsewhere in the
economy. As soon as the cont-
rols are lifted the economy
will race back into a more
realistic equilibrium that may
refuel the inflationary fires.
It has been said that a small
businessman should be comp-
ensated for their work and
time in collecting and proces-
sing the province's sales tax.
I agree that there should be
some equitable remunerat-
ion of a businessman's labour
and time for this tedious
job.
On July 1, 1974, the Ontario
Government introduced a
Guaranteed Annual Income
System for the elderly,
disabled and blind with
monthly payments to eligible
persons to ensure a minimum
annual income of $2600
for single people and $5200
for couples. In response to
higher living costs the GAINS
minimum income was raised
to' $2700 and $5400 respect-
ively on October 1, 1974.
A further increase effective
January 1, 1975, moved the
GAINS guarantees to $2766
for single people and $5532
for couples.
Also to help defray cost of
living expense the Govern-
ment introduced a new Drug
Benefit Plan on September 1,
1974, allowing free prescrib-
ed drugs to recipients of the
Federal GIS pensions or Ont-
ario GAINS or Family Benefit
plans.
I do not favour a move by
the province through the Ont-
ario Provincial Police to police
municipalities under 10,000
population, but 1 do see room
for consolidation of forces
at the county level in much
the same way as the Huron
and Middlesex County Counc-
ils are presently consolidating
police service. 1 think the dec-
ision should be left to the
County Council. since the ser-
vice is more directly related
to those people than the
provincial government.

Grand Bend
store buys calf
at Western Fair
The Tender Spot at Grand
Bend has purchased one of
the top calves at this year's
Western Fair in London.
According to store manager
Gary Masse: thc firm purch-
ased • the Reserve Grand
Champion calf for the sum
of $1.10 per pound.
Emmerson Gill of the Corb-
ett Abbatoir bought the calf
at the auction on behalf of
the Grand Bend meat store.
The animal was owned by
Jim Thompson of Platts-
ville.
Mr. Masse said the pru-
chasc of top quality beef
of this type coincides with
their continuing efforts to
provide their customers with
thc best calibre of meat
possible. Meat from this
championship calf will be
available at the Tender Spot
in the very near future.

do not feel that standard
grade 13 examinations for
all students should be enc-

adequately test a student's

These exams cannot test
motivation on achievement
in certain academic interests.
A grat many courses open to
a student at university or
college are not even offered
at the high school level.
