Use of fertilizer for forage
An annual broadcast fert-
ilizer application is recom-
mended for all established
forage stands. The amount
of fertilizer and the correct
analysis should be determined
by a soil test, says Pat Lynch,
Soils and Crops Specialist of
the Ontario Ministry of Ag-
riculture and Food. This
is important since different
forage species and different
soil types require differing
amounts of nutrients. A soil
test, which recommends the
amount of nutrients requir-
ed for a certain field, 'will

promote most efficient use
of fertilizer.
Where a soil test is not
possible, a general recom-
mendation for • a stand of
mostly legumes would be
200 pounds per acre of 0-
20-20 on clay soils or 400
pounds of 0-10-30 on sandy
soils.
This fertilizer should be
applied in late August or
about three weeks before the
critical harvest date. Since the
critical harvest date varies
across Ontario, the optimum
•time for fertilizing will also
vary. The fertilizer should be
applied, especially for leg-
umes, in August so that it
will be available to the plant
during the six weeks of its
fall rest period. During this
period, the plant uses the
fertilizer to develop crown
buds which, in turn, will
determine the next year's
growth. The plant later uses
fertilizer to build root re-
serves. These reserves -are
needed for winter survival.
Therefore, this fertilizer helps
to determine the winter surv-
ival of the plant and also the

amount of top growth for the
next year.
For grass stands, nitrogen
should be applied as early as
possible in the spring. Rec-
ent research has shown that
with the high cost of hay, it
sometimes pays to apply as
much as 200 pounds of nitrog-
en on grass stands. If more
than 100 pounds of total nit-
rogen (N) per acre is required,
a portion (up to 50 pounds
of N per acre) should be appl-
ied in late August or early
September. This early fall
application stimulates tiller-
ing and early spring growth.
A general recommendation
for grass stands on clay soils
would be 200 pounds of
0-20-20 plus nitrogen. Simil-
arly, sandy soils would require
400 pounds of 0-10-30 plus
nitrogen.
A bore is a person who has
nothing to say - and says it.

much of it!
