Bean Festival Day was no exception. New insecticide for warble fly This year a new systemic insecticide has been approv- ed for use in the war on warble flies --or cattle gribs-- bringing the number of licen- sed chemicals to four. Profes- sor R.E. Wright, Depart- ment of Environmental Biol- ogy, Ontario Agricultural College, says the new system- ic. Spotton, will join Co-Ral, Neguvon and Tuelene in the front line. Spotton will be available in a 20 percent concentrat- ion (higher than the other pesticides) and must be appl- ied only to the middle of the back of cattle. It will come as a ready -to -use solution appl- ied with a special syringe or gun. Co-Ral is applied as a spray over the back, while Neguvon comes as a ready -to -use sol- ution to be poured on the Back. There are two formul- ations of Ruelene. Ruelene 25E can be mixed with water and used as a pour -on or spray; the other formulation is a ready -to -use solution that can be poured over the back. These systemic insectic- ides, which are absorbed into the cattle's body, should only by applied from September 15 to November 30. Professor Wright advises cattlemen against treating their cattle in December, January or February since the cattle grubs are located primarily in the gullet or spinal cord at that time of year. Grubs killed in these areas stimul- ate the body's defences and adverse side effects may occur. If treatment is to take place during this time, it should be done under a vet- erinarian 's supervision. According to Professor About people you know Mrs. Roy Knoll, Port Col- borne, accompanied by Mrs. Ed Witt, Oakville, spent the long weekend with Mrs. Knoll's parents, Mr. and Mrs. 'T.H. Meyers. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Williams and sons, Peter and Evan, of Toronto also spent a few days with their grandparents, the boys remained a few days longer to take in the Bean Festival. Wright, systemics should also be used on non -lactating dairy cattle, if they have been exp- osed to adult warble flies during the summer. He points out that these systemics will reduce the population of cattle lice .but not eliminate them. Other insecticides may have to be used on heavily infested animals. Before any insecticide is applied, Professor Wright advises cattlemen to read the labels carefully.. The fact - sheet prepared by the Ont- ario Ministry of Agriculture and Food entitled "War on Warbles," Order No 75-061, is currently undergoing rev- ision and is expected to be published in August.
